(Associated Press) Spring training statistics don’t count for beans. But spring training quotes count for all the marbles.  After a subpar outing Monday, the best pitcher in baseball provided what might end up being the quote of the year in baseball. Mets young gun second baseman/outfielder Jordany Valdespin squared to bunt and took a Verlander fastball to the, uh, yeah.  Following the game, Matthew B. Mowery of The Oakland Press (Pontiac, MI) was on the receiving end of one of Verlander’s better quotes in recent memory. Mowery: Have you ever … Verlander: Hit somebody in the nuts? No. I mean, he took a hack at the first pitch. He already hit one bomb, and then the next one, he just totally squared at me, and I was like ‘Oh, God, this isn’t going to be good.’ Right out of the hand, it’s like ‘Oh, (crap).’ That is right at his balls.” Yep, it hit Valdespin right there.  This was after the Mets’ JV led off the game with a home run against the Tigers’ JV.  Verlander left the game after going 4 1/3 innings and giving up five earned runs.  Valdespin left with sore boys. And while he couldn’t have felt too well after the game, Valdespin was available for some colorful comments:     And the Mets’ take on the situation.  They weren’t upset about Verlander drilling one of their younger players…   I’m guessing Valdespin wasn’t too happy with Valdespin’s judgment on not wearing a cup.
