Justin Verlander will be a part of the Detroit Tigers’ pitching staff through at least the 2019 season. That much is certain after Verlander signed a five-year extension, with an option for a sixth season, that could keep Verlander in the Motor City through 2020. The deal reportedly is worth $140 million over those five extra years; the vesting-option year carries an additional $22 million price tag. All totaled, Verlander could earn up to $202 million over the next eight seasons. The Tigers tweeted out a photo of Verlander signing his lucrative new deal on Friday afternoon: Signed. Sealed. #AlwaysaTiger twitter.com/tigers/status/… — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) March 29, 2013 The downside of this deal: The Tigers may not have the money to spend to keep Max Scherzer around. Scherzer is arbitration eligible in 2014, then can hit free agency prior to the 2015 season. Between Verlander, Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, the Tigers have nearly $600 million locked up in three players over the next several seasons, possibly meaning Scherzer’s days are short here.
