Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Karstens was removed due to discomfort in his right hip flexor after getting only one out in the first inning against Milwaukee on Friday night. The Brewers hit Karstens hard, with five of six batters reaching base. Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run single and Corey Hart hit a two-run homer to give Milwaukee a 4-0 lead. Jonathan Lucroy followed with a single on Karstens' 20th pitch, prompting trainers to go to the mound and talk to the right-hander. He walked back into the dugout and was replaced by right-hander Kyle McPherson, recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis earlier Friday. Karstens was pitching for the first time since being removed due to a grain strain after seven innings in a 4-0 victory over Milwaukee last Saturday.

First Pitch: Will Cole and Taillon Make the Majors in 2013?

The Pirates have pushed Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon at the end of the season. Taillon received a promotion to Double-A for his final three starts, after having an up and down year in Bradenton. Cole was sent to Indianapolis for his final start of the year, and for some playoff experience, despite dealing with some control issues in his final two starts in Double-A. Taillon handled...

Starling Marte and Tim Wood both received the honors, with Wood making the list for the second year in a row. Marte hit for a .286/.347/.500 line in 388 at-bats with Indianapolis, before being promoted to the majors in late July. Prior to his promotionâ...

To make room, the Spikes placed right-handed pitcher Lance Breedlove and outfielder Tyler Gaffney on the disabled list.

Barmes Compared to Mystery Players

Clint Barmes is having a miserable year with the bat. I don’t really care, though. He could hit .000 and his glove would more than make up for his awful bat. I’m kidding. That’s a ridiculous notion. Barmes’ inability to provide any tangible offense continues to weigh this team down. That got me to thinking about two players from the 1980s. They weren’t full time players...

Another Miller Park nightmare

The Pirates’ woes in Miller Park appear to be back, as they dropped game two of this weekend’s series in extremely frustrating fashion and are now in danger of being swept. A.J. Burnett delivered a solid start – his best in a while, and really deserved better. Burnett actually carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but allowed a run before it was even broken up. How? It’s...

Pirates' Karstens leaves early again -- hip injury this time

Jeff Karstens doesn't have the best stuff of the five pitchers in the Pittsburgh Pirates' rotation. However, the right-hander's value lies in his ability to keep the Pirates in most of his starts. Thus, it was bad news when Karstens was forced to leave a second straight start because of a leg injury Friday night in a 9-3 loss at Milwaukee. He was pulled because of right...

Burnett’s stellar start spoiled, hearts broken in Milwaukee

The Pirates tied the game in the 8th inning and headed to the 9th tied at 2.  John Axford got Pedro Alvarez and Josh Harrison to ground out to start, but Rod Barajas decided it wouldn’t end there.  He singled to center field, and Axford’s lack of command walked pinch hitters Michael McKenry and Gaby [...]
