Not sure what the selection process for the award is, but I’m always happy to see Junior Griffey honored. One of my all-time faves: Ken Griffey Jr., whose superior performance and effervescent demeanor thrilled legions of fans throughout his 22-year career, will receive the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award, which recognizes achievements and contributions of historical significance. Griffey will be recognized at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington during a news conference Sunday preceding Game 4 of the World Series. He will become only the 12th recipient of the award, which was created in 1998, and the first since 2007, when Rachel Robinson was honored for sustaining the legacy of her late husband, Jackie Robinson, and for her service to Major League Baseball.
