PHOENIX (AP) -- Jason Kubel became the seventh player in Diamondbacks' history to homer three times in a game, driving in six runs as Arizona dominated the Houston Astros for the second straight game, 12-3 on Saturday night. Kubel hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run shot in the fourth off starter Dallas Keuchel (1-2). He added a solo homer off reliever Enerio Del Rosario in the sixth. He struck out in his other two at-bats. With the first three-homer game of his career, Kubel leads the NL with 70 RBIs. Wade Miley (11-5) gave up a run and four hits in seven innings, striking out a career-high nine while setting a franchise rookie record for victories. The Astros lost their fifth straight and 18th in 20 games. Kubel, signed as a free agent in the offseason, is one of six players to hit three home runs in a game this season. That includes Josh Hamilton, who hit four. Kubel has 20 home runs, including a two-homer game Thursday in Cincinnati. Willie Bloom...

Confused on the Justin Upton situation

The Arizona Diamondbacks' Justin Upton is not having as good a season as last season. That fact is obvious. But how and why does that translate to wanting to trade a former 1st Round draft pick who is only twenty-four and already has 99 homers to his credit? And how bad is his current season? His fWAR is the exact same as Nick Swisher. And even with his diminished season, Upton...

D-backs take on NL-worst Astros at home

The Arizona Diamondbacks are probably thrilled to be back home facing the lowly Houston Astros. Coming off a huge offensive effort, the Diamondbacks look for a fifth consecutive home victory Saturday night against the Astros. One day after blowing a six-run lead in a 7-6 loss at Cincinnati to conclude a 2-5 trip, Arizona (45-48) pounded out 14 hits during a 13-8 win over Houston...

Moving Happ further closes door on Wade era

HOUSTON Unjust as it was, J.A. Happ became the embodiment of the previous regime, his acquisition a referendum of its inability to accurately appraise talent and secure proper value through trades. Request of ardent Astros fans their assessment of former general manager Ed Wade and, aside from the misappropriation of funds though questionable free-agent signings, the first criticism...

D-backs add Bergesen to bullpen, demote Shaw

PHOENIX -- With Josh Collmenter back in the starting rotation, the Diamondbacks addressed the need for a long reliever by adding newcomer Brad Bergesen on Sunday. Bergesen was acquired off waivers from the Orioles on Friday. Im really looking forward to it. There is definitely a little bit of nervousness, but a good nervousness, Bergesen said. The D-backs optioned Bryan Shaw to...

Astros send Myers to White Sox for minor leaguers

The Houston Astros shipped closer Brett Myers and cash considerations to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday for right-handed pitcher Matt Heidenreich, left-handed pitcher Blair Walters and a player to be named later. Houston continues to stock up its farm system by acquiring the two minor league hurlers. The Astros also picked up four minor leaguers as part of a 10-player deal with...

Diamondbacks 8, Astros 2

Jason Kubel homered for the sixth time in five games, Chris Young added a three-run shot and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Houston 8-2 Sunday to complete a high-scoring, three-game sweep of the staggering Astros. Kubel, coming off a three-homer game Saturday night, led off the second inning with his 21st of the season. Young's homer highlighted a season-high seven-run sixth...

Houston Astros trade Brett Myers to the Chicago White Sox

Jeff Luhnow has been a very busy man this week. Often, it is difficult to figure out what a general manager is trying to do, but nothing is unclear about what the Houston Astros are doing. They are paring down the payroll as much as they possibly can and bringing in as many prospects as they possibly can. When the dust settles on the two deals, the Astros will have added...

White Sox acquire reliever Myers from Houston

The Chicago White Sox have acquired Houston reliever Brett Myers for two minor league pitchers and a player to be named. Myers had 19 saves and a 3.52 ERA for the Astros this season and will try to bolster an inexperienced Chicago bullpen. Addison Reed, Chicago's 23-year-old closer, has 15 saves but a 4.24 ERA. Rookie Nate Jones has a 3.57 ERA in 35 appearances. The White Sox...

Houston Out-Ninjas the Ninja: Acquires Intriguing Prospects from Toronto

It’s no secret that I’ve been a big fan of the moves that Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow has been making. He’s done an outstanding job of turning the organization around despite having almost nothing to work with. Astros fans will not see immediate results at the big league level but the organization – including the front office, scouts, and minor league development...

Brandon Lyon Goes To Blue Jays In 10-Player Swap

The Astros and Blue Jays completed a 10-player trade on Friday, with Houston getting seven players and sending three pitchers including Brandon Lyon to Toronto. The Blue Jays received left-hander J.A. Happ and right-handers Brandon Lyon and David Carpenter. The Astros acquired two Major League players — reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielder Ben Francisco — as well as four...

Rockies-Diamondbacks Preview

Jason Kubel backed Ian Kennedy with a powerful offensive display last week, and he hasn't cooled off since. Kennedy will be on the mound Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks seek a season high-tying fourth straight victory in the opener of a three-game set with the visiting Colorado Rockies. Kubel went 3 for 4 with a second-inning homer to help Arizona (47-48) complete...
