Here is Marrero’s scouting report from www.baseballprospectnation.com:

Body (6-0, 195): Athletic body. Well-proportioned. Wiry with good strength in lower half and through torso. Could use some added strength in the upper body. Good coordination.
Hit: Aggressive hitter that attacks the ball. Needs to improve knowledge of the strike zone and pitch recognition. Has above-average bat speed with good hands. Trigger can get a little lengthy at times, moving the bat to the zone slower than would be ideal. Line-drive swing without elevation or significant leverage. Can work from gap to gap consistently. Will battle desire to pull the ball at times. Needs to adjust approach against better pitching but has natural skills to be a solid-average hitter. Grade – 30/50
Power: Can sting line drives but lacks loft to drive the ball out of the park. Doubles hitter with slim chance for average power. More likely to produce 25-plus doubles and 10-15 home runs at his peak. Additional strength in upper body could boost the home run total slightly. More valuable as a gap-to-gap hitter. Grade (raw power) – 30/40
Arm: Easy plus raw arm strength. Can make all throws required of a shortstop. Can throw from all angles with zip and accuracy. Good carry from deep in the hole. Gets rid of the ball quickly with plus velocity on his throws. Grade – 60/60
Fielding: Very good defender. Exceptional footwork with tremendous first-step quickness and range. Understands pre-pitch positioning and excels at it. Moves very well to both sides. Soft hands with good extension up the middle and a good backhand in the hole. Max-effort defender with plus-plus baseball IQ that helps his raw skills play up a tick. Rare college shortstop that can stick there as a pro. Improved focus on each play will help avoid silly errors. Grade – 50/60
Speed: At least an average runner with occasional home-to-first times in the plus range. Can use speed in game situations thanks to plus-plus instincts and a good feel for the game. Has the body type to maintain speed long term and should be at least an above-average raw runner with some play up off that grade due to instincts. Grade – 60/60

That all seems pretty kosher to me. Apparently he had a down year this season, which is understandable given all the different components to his swing. Players with teo taps and/or the amount of movement that Merrero showed in all the videos I watched tend to either be lightning hot or ice cold.

Toe tapping aside, the Red Sox went and got a guy who, conceptually, can push Iglesias. A player who might not have been there had it not been for his down year.

Overall draft grade – I have no idea. Come talk to me in a couple years.
