Looking at major league baseball just before the start of Spring Training: The National League East has strong Philadelphia, the competitive Braves, the improved Marlins, the upcoming and improved Nationals, and the poor Mets. The NL Central lost Pujols and Fielder and there does not appear to be a super strong team in the division. The NL West teams like the Rockies and Diamondbacks improved, while the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants could each be better. The American East has the always strong Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays, with little hope for the playoffs in Baltimore and Toronto. The AL West has the behemoths, Rangers and Angels with the poor Mariners and Athletics. The strongest team in the AL Central was the Tigers who added Fielder to replace Martinez in the lineup. The Twins, Royals, and White Sox tried to improve. What about the Indians? Can Masterson and Jiminez be the equal of Verlander and Fister? Can Sizemore, Cabrera, Hafner, Kipnis, and others be as productive as the Tiger ...

Inside the Numbers: Indians lineup could be strong in 2012

Jason Kipnis (Photo: AP)The Indians acquisition of Casey Kotchman gives an answer (unsatisfactory to some) to the off-season-long question: Who’s on first? But what does this move spell out for the rest of the roster? Presumably, Kotchman will be given the chance to play 1B on an everyday basis and Matt LaPorta (proud owner of one remaining option) will be asked to compete in Columbus...

Cleveland Indians Sign SS Asdrubal Cabrera for One Year, $4.55 Million

With the player’s arbitration day looming, the Cleveland Indians have signed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year contract worth $4.55 million. The Indians were reportedly in talks with Cabrera for a multi-year deal, but apparently could not lock up the 2011 Silver Slugger winner beyond his current club control status. Cabrera had reportedly asked for $5.2 million with...

Setting the Lines for the 2012 Indians

I like very much when people take firm and decisive stands on things.  For example, “I don’t drink. It’s against my religion.” Or “I’m a vegetarian; it’s the only ethical stance to take.” Or “I believe that Gremlins are real and breeding in the sewers of Montreal.” I bring this up not because I am one of these principled folks—only that I admire them.  For...

Asdrubal Cabrera, Indians agree at 4.55 million

CLEVELAND (AP) -- All-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a 4.55 million, one-year contract and avoided salary arbitration. The agreement Friday was 75,000 above the midpoint between the 5.2 million he had asked for in arbitration last month and the 3.75 million the Indians had offered. A hearing had been scheduled for next week. Cleveland&...

Player Profile #59: Shin-Soo Choo | OF | CLE

Shin-Soo Choo‘s 2011 season was most certainly a down year from his very consistent numbers from 2009-10. Choo was almost a lock for a .300 batting average, 20 homers, 20 steals and 80+ RBI and runs every season, which put him right around a top 10 outfielder. Unfortunately off-field issues and injuries made it difficult for Choo to repeat those numbers in 2011. His .259...

Reviewing the Indians offseason

Grady Sizemore (Photo: AP)This time of year, fans are bundled up in warm clothes and blankets, watching the snow fall as they anxiously await the arrival of spring training. Although Old Man Winter’s wrath will still be felt in Cleveland in mid-February, in Goodyear, Arizona, home of the Indians spring training facilities, it will be baseball season. The sound of bats hitting...

Indians, Clippers Set Killer Bobblehead Slate for 2012

During the 2011 season, the Cleveland Indians bailed on bobblheads, claiming that attendance studies did not support the cost incurred by curating the sub-foot figurines.  While a Mike Hargrove “Human Rain Delay” bobble saw the light of day, that would be it for what would ultimately be a fun year in Wahoo Country.  But for 2012, bobbleheads are back. And in a very...

Rockies don't hold the aces in 2012 with Jimenez gone and De La Rosa hurt

Anchored by ace Ubaldo Jimenez and stoked by the bright promise of lefty Jorge De La Rosa, the Rockies were the preseason toast of baseball. A promising, perhaps even excellent rotation, made a National League West title seem quite plausible.

Around the Horn: Indians infielders

The Indians believe that strength up the middle is integral to a team's success. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and second baseman Jason Kipnis represent an important part of that equation for the upcoming season.
