Barry Larkin has long been considered one of the best shortstops ever. Today, he was recongized as much, earning entrance into Cooperstown in his second year on the ballot. Larkin received 86.4 percent of the vote, easy eclipsing the 75 percent required. Larkin is the 22nd shortstop to reach Cooperstown. He was the first at his position to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season. The unquestioned leader of the Reds, he made 12 all-star teams, started five times and won the 1995 National League MVP award, besting the Rockies’ Dante Bichette. Larry Walker, a longtime Rockie and the 1997 NL MVP, received 23 percent of the vote. Vinny Castilla (six) and Eric Young Sr. (one) also received votes, but not the 5 perecent required to remain on the ballot.
