Missing from tonight's lineup is Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz.  Chooch has a foot injury that has been causing him considerable pain, reports the Delaware County Times' Ryan Lawrence.   Not included in the blog is a quote from Chooch that the injury "felt like a knife" in the back of his ankle.   To keep playing, Ruiz chose to wear turf shoes instead of his cleats.   Turf shoes wear and look very much like sneakers.  Check out a pair of Nike turf shoes here. Lawrence also points out that looking at the time before and after the All-Star game, Ruiz started 17 straight games and caught all but one inning. In his last 10 games, Ruiz is hitting .267, including last night's double.

Are the Red Sox or Phillies More Likely to Get Hot and Make the Playoffs?

The Philadelphia Phillies have been a superb team during manager Charlie Manuel's tenure. But this year, Manuel's eighth with the team, has been a major disappointment. The Phillies are 45-54, last in the National League East. For a team that has one of the strongest lineups in the majors with Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino, the offense...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Built for the present

Cole Hamels was the first name on the to-do list for the Philadelphia Phillies.  Is he the only player who had an expiring contract that will return? TAL’S HANDY CAPS WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every battle that is not washed out.  I will have many season-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially important after drubbings and defeats. If you were directed here...

The Braves Sweep Will Shape Deadline Activity

The Phillies entered this weekend’s series with the Braves fresh off of their first sweep of the season. While they didn’t fire on all cylinders against the Brewers — they won on three late-inning comebacks — the team showed signs of life. It played more like squads from years past than the disappointing 2012 version. The sweep helped them stay somewhat relevant in the playoff...

In Selling, The Phillies Should Seek Quality, Not Needs

There's a lot of talk about what the Phillies need to get as they sell off pieces over the next 39 hours. Indeed, they look like major sellers after this weekend's dud in Atlanta. National and local media types are listing Shane Victorino, Juan Pierre, Joe Blanton, Ty Wigginton, and Hunter Pence as possibilities. I list my trade deadline hopes here. One thing I keep hearing...

Placido Polanco Lands Back on the DL; Kevin Frandsen Call Up

The Phillies placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of lower-back inflammation. It is the same injury that sidelined him last July. This marks the fourth time in his three seasons since rejoining the Phillies in 2010 that Polanco has landed on the disabled list. He can never stay healthy, can he? Polanco's offensive numbers have...

Philadelphia Phillies: 2012 ERA for the MLB 5 at game 101

Joe Blanton of the Philadelphia Phillies is a solid option after the number ones.  How does that match-up with the Brew Crew?  The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my recent coverage linked below. TAL’S HANDY STATS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the number...

Philadelphia Phillies: 2012 ERA for the NL East at game 100

Pitching deep into almost every game, Cole Hamels of the Philadelphia Phillies is among the best.  How does Miami compare after their ace has worked?  The Apocalyptic Horsemen Stats are in my daily coverage. TAL’S HANDY STATS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I am alternating a game-day 2012 ERA For The NL East and a 2012 ERA For The MLB 5. See link section below. In each publication, the...

Hamels falters in first post-signing start against Braves

In a game the Phillies had to win, Cole Hamels and the Phillies offense faltered in a 6-1 Braves win. In five innings, Hamels gave up five runs, three earned, struck out seven but walked six in five innings. The defense was shaky, as with two outs in the second, as Mike Fontenot let a ground ball tie him up and the Braves went ahead 2-1. With two out in the bottom of the 5th, Brian...

Holding Aces

With Cole Hamels’ newly signed contract extension (six years, $144M), the Phillies now have $128M tied up in salary next season for just seven players - Hamels, Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee, Jonathan Papelbon, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley. CBS Sports baseball columnist Jon Heyman reportsthat the Phillies do not plan to trade 33-year old pitcher Cliff Lee, instead preferring...

Phillies meet Braves for key three-game series

Ryan Howard and the Phillies will face Brian McCann and the Braves in a crucial three-game series this weekend. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) The Phillies are 9-10 in July, with a win total matching their month of June. If not for a recent stretch of magic and fantastic finishes, it would be way worse, and the Phillies would still be driving themselves further into the ground. In...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Phillies 7-28-12

Player of the game. :) Mike's gameface and smileface are so different - love it! And, can I just say, I'm pretty tired of people saying he doesn't belong in our rotation. He clearly does. He's had a rough inning here and there but for the most part he's been awesome. Seems like Glavine always gave up runs in the first but then he settled in and now? Now his number...

Braves 6, Phillies 1

Brian McCann hit a three-run homer off Cole Hamels and Ben Sheets continued his impressive comeback to lead the Atlanta Braves past the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 on Friday night. Hamels (11-5), making his first start since signing a six-year, $144 million contract on Wednesday, set a career high with six walks in his shortest start of the season. He allowed five runs, three earned...

Phillies' Amaro: Series against Braves will have an "impact"

Watch the Philadelphia Phillies closely this weekend. The Phillies, who have won four straight and eight of 11, might finally be getting hot. And on Friday night, they begin a three-game series in Atlanta with left-hander Cole Hamels making his first start since agreeing to a six-year, $144 million extension. Will the series determine whether the Phillies are buyers or sellers...
