Ryan Lavarnway joins Xander Bogaerts in a group of top 10's.Both have made the top 10 list of MLB prospects among their respected positions.

Ryan Lavarnway has ranked 8th among catcher prospects in the majors. Who topped the list? Former Yankees prospect and current Mariners minor-league catcher, Jesus Montero. It's not like the Yankees needed a catcher anyway, with all of that talent behind the plate. They will just buy one or buy Montero back in the future.

Here is the MLB report on Lavarnway:

As a sixth-round pick out of a school like Yale, the expectations might not be all that high, and a player will have to prove himself at every level. Lavarnway has done just that, especially with the bat. He hit 32 homers across two levels and made his big league debut in 2011, bringing his career slugging percentage up to .521. While Lavarnway's power has always been his calling card, he's turned himself into a decent backstop as well. Lavarnway is ready for a big league opportunity with the bat, but with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach in Boston, it might not come right away, so he'll likely go back to Triple-A to work on his defense.

Lavarnway has clearly made a name for himself on the offensive side. I do agree that he has come a long way behind the plate, but there is still some work to be done. He is still young, bright, and very confident, so gaining knowledge and skill behind the plate should come easily. Pawtucket will be an excellent experience where he will certainly flourish. He will learn all of the essentials needed to transition into the majors and I hope the Sox don't try to rush him.
