(Thearon Henderson/Getty Images)This time, Jon Lester was respectable. Six and one-third innings, three earned runs. The problem is we have bigger expectations of Lester—he's supposed to be our 1A or 1B ace. He's not even close. And, to his credit, he knows it. Said Lester after the 3-0 loss to the A's, "A loss is a loss, It doesn't matter how well you've pitched when you lose." Indeed. Boston's offense was curiously stymied by one A.J. Griffin. They got seven hits (just one fewer than Oakland), but went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. The loss meant that Boston could not get 60 wins before the All-Star Break. Nevertheless, if they win today (#59), they will have finished the first half with just 10 fewer wins then they got in all of 2012.

Red Sox CEO rocks hoop earrings at concert

Country star Jason Aldean played two sold out shows at Fenway Park this weekend. Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino was at at least one of those shows, as proven by this picture he took with Aldean prior to Friday night’s show. Yup, that’s Lucchino wearing a cowboy hat, suave button-down shirt, and hoop earrings. HOOP EARRINGS! I don’t know if the earring are real or not but oh my...

Workman Gem Wasted In An 11-Inning, 3-2 Loss

(Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)Brandon Workman made a big statement in his first big league start. The 24-year-old righty carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, giving up his bid for immortality and the lead on a two-run home run in that frame. The game droned on until the 11th when the A's walked-off with a 3-2 win—victimizing new Red Sox reliever Matt Thornton. Dustin Pedroia...

Xander Bogaerts, Garin Cecchini Shine at Futures Game, Anthony Ranaudo Struggles on Mound

The Boston Red Sox organization was represented by three prospects in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday afternoon — Xander Bogaerts, Garin Cecchini and Anthony Ranaudo — and two of them had very strong outings. Bogaerts started at shortstop for the World team, which lost 4-2. He went 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk and a run scored on a sacrifice fly. He is currently playing...

Like oil and water - Aceves and the Sox just don't mix

The Guru Contributing Writer With the Red Sox thin in the bullpen and needing a Sunday starter it's interesting to note that Alfredo Aceves, who would seem a likely contender for a spot, was shipped off to the minors. Again. Despite pitching well in three spot starts this season, Aceves has yet to stick with the team. His last call up lasted less than an inning. When constructing...

Alfredo Aceves Outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket, Now Off Red Sox’ 40-Man Roster

Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves‘ time with the club has been interesting to say the least, and the latest occurrence of that ongoing saga took place this weekend as the team’s unofficial first half came to an end. Aceves was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket following the team’s extra-innings loss to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon. In order for Aceves to be outrighted...

Drake Britton Can Continue to Make Things Right by Showing Maturity in First Stint With Red Sox

Drake Britton screwed up royally during spring training. But to his credit, the 24-year-old has worked tirelessly this season, and he now has a chance to make an impression on the Red Sox. Britton was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before Sunday’s game in Oakland. It marks the first major league stint of Britton’s career, and it will be an opportunity for him to show that he...

Xander Bogaerts Dazzles at Futures Game, Earns Very High Praise for Impressive Performance

The future looks pretty bright for the Red Sox, especially thanks to one player who looks very ready to become a star very soon. Infielder Xander Bogaerts has been a top prospect for some time, but as he begins to knock on the major league door, he’s starting to get more and more recognition. His impressive performance in Sunday’s MLB Futures Game in New York certainly doesn’t...

Matt Thornton Trade Makes Sense for Red Sox Despite Any Concerns Surrounding Southpaw

Boston could always use another Thornton, right? The Red Sox acquired reliever Matt Thornton, along with cash considerations, from the White Sox on Friday in exchange for minor league outfielder Brandon Jacobs. The deal — like any trade, really — carries some risk, but not enough to reconsider the addition of a potentially valuable left-hander to a bullpen in flux. It was no...

Jacoby Ellsbury’s Streak Comes To An End, But Red Sox Keep Rolling In Oakland

Even though Jacoby Ellsbury‘s hitting streak came to an end Friday night against the Athletics, the Red Sox still walked away victorious for the 58th time this season. The win column is the highest its ever been for Boston before the All-Star Break. In the last leg of their West Coast fling, the Red Sox are one win away from matching the total number of series wins in 2012. Last...

Boston Red Sox Acquire White Sox Southpaw Matt Thronton

The Boston Red Sox acquired left-handed reliever Matt Thorton from the Chicago White Sox late Friday night.  Earlier this week Boston lost LHP Andrew Miller for the season and the team acted quickly to fill the void. “You don’t go into July hoping to trade for a reliever,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said in a conference call Friday night. “But we are what we...

Steven Wright Optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to Make Room for Newly Acquired Matt Thornton

It’s back to Triple-A for Steven Wright. The Red Sox announced that Wright, who dazzled in relief on Thursday, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for the newly acquired Matt Thornton. Wright pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen against the Mariners on Thursday, but the Red Sox acquired Thornton in a trade with the White Sox on Friday. Boston sent minor...

Recap: Sox lose in extras, drop series

(AP Photo/Ben Margot)            Yes, Jonny, that was the second straight game lost by the Sox. That was Jonny Gomes arguing with home plate Umpire, Todd Tichenor, that he did call time out in time (which he didn't), before he struck out in the 9th. Gomes was promptly ejected from the game not long after the argument began. It all started to downhill way before that...

Video: Don Orsillo Gets The Gift of Garlic

The Emperor of Red Sox Nation California must have really thought Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy needed some help to keep vampires away. I say the this because he gave the NESN dynamic duo, the gift of garlic, a lot of garlic. Remy gave his to Orsillo so to me that means DO has a problem with vampires. Just wait until you see in the video how much garlic. Your...

8:03 p.m.: Reliever Matt Thornton, who was acquired from the White Sox on Friday, has joined the team. To make room for Thornton, Boston has optioned Steven Wright to Triple-A Pawtucket. Wright will head back down, but it’s not before he left a mark. The knuckleballer pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief in Seattle on Thursday while earning his first major league win. In the...
