Start 'Em Anibal Sanchez (@CHC, @PIT) After flaunting a 2.56 ERA at the end of May, Sanchez has been hit with a dose of reality, getting rocked for 30 runs in his past seven outings, five of which have resulted in losses for the Marlins. Sanchez's upcoming slate, however, should provide a platform to bounce back, taking on middling offenses in the Pirates and Cubbies. Better yet, both starts come on the road, where Sanchez maintains a 2.96 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in eight games this season. Factor in the progression predicted by the sabermetrics (67.2 left-on-base percentage, 0.70 ERA-FIP) and it's easy to buy into Sanchez's near future. Phil Hughes (TOR, @OAK) Perhaps it's premature to pronounce Hughes as back to his first-half form from the 2010 season, but the 26-year-old is certainly on his way. In his last seven starts, Hughes owns a 2.87 ERA with 43 strikeouts versus 10 walks. The home run continues to give the Pinstripes pitcher trouble, as Hughes concede...

Your Morning Dump...where Jon Lester continues to struggle

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Have the Red Sox gone to every member of the organization, sought their input and tried to implement their ideas and suggestions in order to fix Lester? Let’s hope so, because if any member of this rotation...

Royals had no choice but to release Sanchez

Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez's nightmarish tenure with the Royals finally ended Tuesday, not long after a cascade of boos rained down on him in his last start Monday, boos that rivaled in intensity those delivered at Kauffman Stadium toward Robinson Cano at the Home Run Derby. The Royals designated Sanchez for assignment, less than 24 hours after he was rocked for seven runs...

Jon Lester Frustrated With Continued Struggles on Mound for Red Sox (Video)

Jon Lester was once again off the mark on Tuesday, lasting only four inning against the White Sox and allowing six runs. The 2012 season has been one to forget for Lester, and the Red Sox ace is certainly feeling the frustration. Physically, Lester says he has no issues, but the bad starts continue to pile up. The three-run home run Lester allowed to Kevin Youkilis only added insult...

Sanchez struggles early in Royals loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- One week ago, Kauffman Stadium was filled with boos intended to support the Royals' hometown guy. On Monday night, the hometown guy was the recipient. Jonathan Sanchez allowed the first five Seattle batters he faced to score and gave up seven runs before getting yanked in the second inning. The Mariners took advantage of the rare offensive outburst and...

Royals designate pitcher Sanchez for assignment

Jonathan Sanchez, the primary player involved in the trade that sent Melky Cabrera to the Giants, has done little for the Kansas City Royals, so the Royals essentially replaced him on the roster with the minor-league player acquired in the Cabrera trade -- Ryan Verdugo. Verdugo was scheduled to make his major-league debut Tuesday. Sanchez has been designated for assignment after...

Royals ready to admit Sanchez deal was a flop

The trade -- outfielder Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez and minor league lefty Ryan Verdugo -- seemingly made sense for the Kansas City Royals when it was announced last Nov. 7. Sure, Cabrera was coming off a career year in which he batted .305 with 44 doubles and 201 hits. However, the Royals needed starting pitching, and Sanchez had...

Royals DFA Jonathan Sanchez

Well then, I bet no one would have imagined in April that this would happen. The Kansas City Royals have designated starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez for assignment. The Royals have also recalled Ryan Verdugo and Vin Mazzaro, and will start Verdugo tonight in Kansas City against the Mariners. Kansas City traded for Sanchez this offseason, dealing Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco...

What's Wrong With Jon Lester?

The enthusiasm generated by the nearly simultaneous returns of Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford was stopped dead in its tracks on Tuesday night in Fenway Park with what can be summed up in six words - what is wrong with Jon Lester?Lester (pictured) had another subpar outing lasting just 4 innings.  He was charged with 6 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in the Red Sox 7-5 loss to the...

Jon Lester Must Overcome Mental Roadblocks in Order to Reclaim Role as Leader of Red Sox Staff

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. Another Jon Lester start, and another Red Sox loss in the books. Boston's No. 1 starter heading into the 2012 season has been anything but an ace so far, and Tuesday night proved no...

Jon Lester And A Few Waiver Pitchers

He was supposed to be an ace, the stopper, one of the best lefties in the game. Instead he’s been mediocre, and that may even be giving him too much slack. Jon Lester is the 90th overall ranked starting pitcher in ESPN standard leagues. He’s got an ERA in the mid 4′s and a WHIP that doesn’t inspire confidence in anyone except the opposing team. He also owns one of the worst...

Pirates Have Expressed Interest in Jon Lester and Jason Vargas

As per Nick Cafardo’s Sunday column in the Boston Globe, Jon Lester has “been on the Pirates’ radar” along with the usual suspects of Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, Matt Garza, and Ryan Dempster.  Carfardo goes on to say that, “It doesn’t appear the Sox would deal unless they got exceptional value back, and it doesn’t appear the Pirates would part with pitching prospect Gerrit...

Mariners-Royals Preview

(AP) -- The Seattle Mariners' offense has been quite a mystery over the last week, piling up runs one game and failing to produce the next. The biggest unknown for the Mariners' game in Kansas City on Tuesday night, however, is the Royals' stating pitcher. Seattle (38-53) has split its last six games, combining for 23 runs in the wins while scoring three in the defeats...
