Blah blah blah mometum only lasts until the next day in baseball blah blah blah. The Pirates literally (actual meaning of the word in this case) played the worst game that I can ever remember them playing yesterday. That's all there is to say about it. They should try to not do that again today, but yesterday's debacle is going to be seared into my brain for a looooong time. Jeff Samardzija makes his last start of 2012 against James McDonald. McDonald will likely be backed by a group of players that will play defense like trolls in the sunlight. First pitch is at 7:10. Watch at your own risk.

Pirates Notebook: McDonald Showing Progress; Rotation Set for Cincinnati

James McDonald – Photo by Mark Olson It’s been a frustrating second half of the season for James McDonald. But there have been signs that the right-hander is bouncing back to his first half form. McDonald had to battle on Saturday at PNC Park against Chicago. The only clean inning he threw was the first. But he was able to stay away from the big innings, which had caused him...

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher, Jeff Samardzija will make his final start of 2012 today against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cubs manager Dale Sveum made the announcement subsequent to Friday’s game. According to ESPN Chicago, the decision to shut Samardzija down is a precautionary effort due in part because of the work he put in during the winter and spring months. Samardzija (8-13...

Chicago Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija will be shut down for the season following his start on Saturday at the Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB.com reported. Samardzija will make his 28th start of the season and has pitched 165 2/3 innings. The Cubs decided that is enough. He came into the season with 169 2/3 career innings pitched. He made the transition to starting this season after...

Beyond Samardzija and Garza, Cubs' rotation is unsettled

The Chicago Cubs' rotation these days is part patchwork and part open audition for 2013. After the Cubs shut right-hander Jeff Samardzija down for the season after Saturday's complete-game victory over the Pirates, they are without four key pitchers from earlier this season: Samardzija, injured pitcher Matt Garza and traded starters Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm. Assuming...

Welp, the Pirates just lost a home series to the Cubs

We weren’t about to go crazy because the Pirates committed 7 errors on Friday…that was more funny than depressing. But we are pissed that they couldn’t bounce back from it against the second-worst team in the NL last night. Even though James McDonald wasn’t terrible, Jeff Samardzija shut down the Bucco Bats and just like that, the Bucs have lost a home series to the...

Cubs 4, Pirates 3

Jeff Samardzija pitched the Cubs' first complete game in his final start of the season and Chicago beat the fading Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Saturday night. David DeJesus singled in Welington Castillo with two outs in the eighth for the go-ahead run after Pittsburgh had tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the seventh. Samardzija (9-13) overcame a rocky first inning to allow...

Cubs edge Bucs

The Pirates weren’t a sloppy embarrassment on Saturday night like they were on Friday, but they were outpitched and dropped a 4-3 battle to lose this weekend’s series against the lowly Cubs. James McDonald wasn’t too bad. He wasn’t good, but he at least managed to hold things together and not throw the game away. The Cubs put up a run in the second, third, and fifth innings...

First Pitch: Indianapolis is Finished, Are the Pirates Finished Too?

The Indianapolis Indians were eliminated from the International League playoffs tonight, ending their season. That also wraps up the minor league season for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The major league season has a little less than a month to go. But do the Pirates have anything left to play for? I’ve got to be honest here. I didn’t watch much of the last two games. On Friday I was...
