Velez will now drop fly balls in Chavez Latrine.
The Los Angeles Dodgers just can't seem to keep their stinkin' fingers off our guys. The boys in blue are so desperate for a piece of orange and black magic, they way-overpaid for Juan Uribe last month. Now, according to MLB Trade Rumors, the Dodgers have signed outfielder Eugenio Velez. I know imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but Dodgers GM (and former Giants assistant GM) Ned Colletti is starting to make a buffoon of himself.
Velez, 28, was non-tendered by the Giants earlier this month -- even though he wasn't even arbitration-eligible. That should have been Colletti's first clue.
Gigantes fans can tell you just how coveted Velez was while part of the San Francisco organization. Just ask anyone who attended the Giants-Phillies game on April 28, when Velez dropped a routine fly ball in the 11th inning that helped give Philadelphia a 7-6, come-from-behind win. Or, remember that time when Madison Bumgarner went ballistic after Velez dropped a fly in a Triple-A game? How about the time Velez took one off his noodle in the dugout? (OK, that last one wasn't really his fault, but still.)
The point is, he's toast. But Colletti loves him some Giants leftovers.
Didn't the Dodgers learn their lesson (when they stole Jason Schmidt away) that it just doesn't pay to sign ex-Giants?
