The Los Angeles Dodgers completed a four game sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers are now 31-7 in their last 38 games, have a franchise-best streak of 14 consecutive road wins, and have increased their lead in the NL West division to 5 1/2 games over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Heading into the series with the Cubs, the Dodgers had made the decision to push back Zack Greinke’s scheduled start to Monday. The idea behind the change was motivated by a multitude of reasons — first being Greinke would get an extra day of rest, he has a history of struggling in Wrigley Field, and it would allow the Dodgers to send Greinke and Kershaw to the mound in their upcoming four game series with the St. Louis Cardinals. Sweeping the Cubs did cost the Dodgers some bumps and bruises as Yasiel Puig suffered a thumb contusion in Saturday’s game and is considered day-to-day, and Hanley Ramirez and Andre Ethier each had misfortunes in Sunday’s game. Hanley Ramirez (photo credit: Brian Kersey/AP Photo) In the bottom of the seventh inning Ramirez went tumbling into the seats just off third base as he tracked a pop-up, which had been influenced by the strong blowing wind. Ramirez managed to hold onto the ball as he attempted to stop his momentum before ultimately falling into the stands over the brick wall that encompasses Wrigley Field. When he emerged from the stands, Ramirez was clutching his right shoulder and was immediately removed from the game. The Dodgers released an update on Ramirez shortly after the game concluded, stating he had a jammed shoulder and more information would be available tomorrow. Ethier’s bout with pain doesn’t appear to be as serious as Ramirez’s. He was hit by a pitch on the lower half of his right leg. He crouched down for a moment to gather himself, but was able to remain in the game. The prospect of losing Ramirez a third time to the disabled list would be a big blow to the streaking Dodgers. Regardless of what lies ahead, the Boys in Blue must remain focused and continue pushing through the dog days of August and into September.
