Clayton Kershaw held the Atlanta Braves to one run in game 1 of the NLDS (photo credit: Dale Zaninie, USA TODAY Sports) With timely hitting and a gutty performance from Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-1 to take a 1-0 lead in the National League Division Series. Kershaw pitched seven innings, allowing only three hits and one run to go with 12 strikeouts. The 12 strikeouts by Kershaw set a Dodgers League Division Series record. Kershaw struggled with his control at times, but remained composed and recorded six consecutive strikeouts in a stretch ranging from the fourth inning to the sixth. Capitalizing on the pension of Braves batters to strike out, Dodger pitchers combined for a total of 15 strike outs. Four of the Dodgers six runs came with two outs, capped with Adrian Gonzalez’s two-run home run in the third inning that gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead and they never looked back. The Dodgers reached six runs for only the third time in their last 10 games. Yasiel Puig went 2-for-4 in his postseason debut, and in his trademarked fashion, moved from first to third on a single by Juan Uribe before scoring the first run of the game on a Skip Schumaker sacrifice fly. Prior to the game, Braves starter Kris Medlen had poignant remarks about Kershaw and the Dodgers.  Medlen said the Braves felt as though it was Kershaw who missed out on facing the Braves during the team’s seven regular season games. Medlen further went on to liken the attention the Dodgers were receiving to running for prom king. After a strong first inning, the Dodgers got to Medlen and he survived only four innings, allowing five runs. The loss is Medlen’s first at Turner Field in his last seven starts. The Dodgers have landed the first punch in the series, but should not be satisfied with simply taking game 1.  With a win tomorrow, the Braves would find themselves right back in the series. Zack Greinke will take the mound on Friday afternoon looking to give the Dodgers a commanding 2-0 series lead. Clayton Kershaw Changes the Script

Clayton Kershaw “struggled with his fastball command,” wrote one recap of Thursday’s NLDS Game 1 in Atlanta. “He couldn’t throw the ball where he wanted,” said another, again referring to his fastball, and he “wasn’t at his best early,” wrote yet another. Those takes were all accurate, and when you’re reading reviews of a starting pitcher’s playoff performance...

Clayton Kershaw leads Dodgers past Braves, 6-1

The Dodgers looked like that team from midsummer that stormed to the top of the division while Clayton Kershaw looked a lot like the pitcher they’ve seen all season. It all proved too much for the Atlanta Braves who saw the Dodgers jump out to a 6-1 victory in the opener of their National League division series at Turner Field in Atlanta on Thursday. Kershaw was dominating striking...

Three things: How Dodgers took Game 1 vs. Braves

The Dodgers' success isn't built on offense, which is why the loss of Matt Kemp for the postseason and Andre Ethier from the starting lineup was never viewed as major. Big, yes. Major, not really. The Dodgers' strength lies in their pitching, in Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. So although they displayed some clutch hitting in beating the Atlanta Braves 6-1 Thursday...

MLB Game Picks - Thursday: October 3, 2013

I love Nick Swisher, I do. But his performance in the Wild Card Game last night against the Rays was so reminiscent of past post seasons for him. His first few times up, he had a strikeout and then grounded the ball right into the teeth of the shift when there were no fielders from second base to third. Then, when he had a man on first and third, instead of embracing or understanding...
