According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox could potentialy trade infielder Jed Lowrie this offseason. Last season, Lowrie posted a .252/.303/.383 slash with six home runs, 14 doubles and 36 RBI in 341 plate appearances. The knock on Lowrie has been an inability to stay on the field and he always seems to be out with some sort of nagging injuriy. It’s too bad because if he were able to solve his durability issues, you’re talking about a very versatile switch-hitter who can cover all four infield infield positions, and is an especially dangerous batter from the right side of the plate. Lowrie, 27, has become expendable now that the Red Sox have picked up the option on Marco Scutaro who the team loves and is expected to get the lion’s share of the playing time. Check out his splits against LHP last season (.330/.353/.523) and you’ll understand why I see him as someone who could help the Mets next season. From a salary standpoint, he’s chea...

Breaking News: Bobby Valentine Expected to be new Boston Red Sox Manager

As reported by several media outlets, including ESPNBoston.com, Bobby Valentine has accepted the offer to become the next manager of the Boston Red Sox. Neither Valentine, who was in Japan for a charity event, nor the Red Sox organization have commented, although GM Ben Cherington said Monday that he had hoped to conclude the search by week’s end. Valentine, who has spent...

Send NESN's Tom Caron a Question for His Weekly Red Sox Mailbag

The calendar turns to December this week, but could it soon be Valentine's Day at Fenway Park? The Red Sox continue to weigh managerial options, with the hottest name being former Mets skipper Bobby Valentine. Bobby V was in Boston last week to meet with general manager Ben Cherington, and a final decision is expected within the next week. If Valentine does not get the job, Gene...

The Zen Master Arrives: Bobby Valentine to Manage the Red Sox

While it is not official just yet, ESPN’s Gordon Edes is reporting that Bobby Valentine will be named the new manager of the Boston Red Sox ending a nearly two month long search. The former Rangers and Mets manager will be at the helm of a major league club for the first time since 2002. His hiring is something of a surprise, as he was not among the initial managers interviewed...

Boston Red Sox set to hire Bobby Valentine

According to multiple sources, the Boston Red Sox are set to hire former New York Mets manager, and ESPN analyst, Bobby Valentine as the team’s next manager to replace the departed Terry Francona. Valentine reportedly was presented with an offer on Tuesday, accepted it, and will be present at a formal announcement tomorrow upon his return from a trip to Japan. It’s an...

New Manager Likes to Do Stuff

Bobby Valentine is going to be the new Red Sox manager, pending agreement on a contract. I’m generally happy about this. It’s not just that Valentine has a good record as a manager, but more that he’s got upside. A manager like Valentine could win you a handful of games – and he’s going to try to win those games. Most statistically-inclined clubs have opted for managers...

Joe Lemire: Red Sox take risk with Valentine

The Red Sox are taking two risks by hiring Bobby Valentine, says Joe Lemire. Valentine's strong personality may backfire, and it appears the new GM did not make the final decision.

For Red Sox, Life Just Got Very Interesting

Bobby Valentine is set to take over the Red Sox -- and make a big impression on their rabid fans.

Bobby Valentine hired as next Red Sox manager

Looks we can finally — and thankfully — tie a bow on this one, folks. After a search that seemed like it would never end, numerous outlets are reporting that the Boston Red Sox have settled on Bobby Valentine as the team's next manager. It's Valentine's third top gig in the major leagues, but first since he was fired by the New York Mets in 2002. I'll be square...

Broxton’s agent doesn’t think he’ll sign with Mets

In a post to Twitter, Mark Hale of the New York Post says BB Abbott, the agent for RHP Jonathan Broxton, doesn’t think his client will be signing with the Mets. Last week, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN said Broxton, who missed most of the 2011 season with a bruised elbow was to begin throwing soon, and is expected to seek a one-year deal to rebuild his value and enter free agency...

Olney On Rollins, Fielder, Red Sox

Between his ESPN.com blog and his Twitter feed, Buster Olney has a few hot stove notes to share this morning. Let's check them out.... Jimmy Rollins, who turns 33 today, is seeking a five-year deal this winter, and the Phillies may have to commit that many years if they want to bring their longtime shortstop back. "I'm not sure if Rollins will get five years,"...

Pirates Sign Nick Evans

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed first baseman/outfielder Nick Evans to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training, according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News.  Evans turns 26 in January, and was recently removed from the New York Mets’ 40-man roster after hitting for a .256/.314/.403 line in 176 at-bats in the majors in 2011.  He’s played all...

Gene, Gene, the Waiting Machine

Gene Lamont is getting a little uncomfortable wit the Red Sox situation: “I’m a little antsy, to be honest with you,’’ Lamont said yesterday. “This has kind of dragged on.’’ I wonder who is fighting for whom in the front office meetings? Maybe Lamont can go on the Gong Show while he’s waiting.
