San Diego Padres
New York Mets
Just like the final series before the All-Star break, the Padres took game one from the Reds only to drop the final three in the long series. The series saw plenty of offense supplied by the Friars as they totaled 25 runs over the series, scoring at least four runs per game.
Former Friar Ryan Ludwick shined against San Diego pitching, going 6-12 with two homer runs and 10 RBIs in the three games he played.
The Padres ended their road trip 3-7 as they head back to San Diego tonight. July was their first winning month since August of 2010 in which their unforgettable 10 game slide began that eventually led to losing the division to the Giants on the season’s final day.
So far they are 0-2 this month as they look to earn their first win against R.A. Dickey of the Mets as they will don the totally awesome brown pinstripe uniforms they wore from 1985-1990 as part of “80’s night” at Petco Park Friday night.
Below is a recap of their series at Great American Ballpark.

The Reds got off to a 0-6 lead in the third inning, but then let the Padres tie it back up in the top of the fourth. Luckily, the relief pitching was on and Brandon Phillips had one more solo shot to contribute in the seventh. Final score: Reds 7, Padres 6.
If the Reds can win tonight, they can ensure no less than a split of the four-game series against the Padres...

CINCINNATI The absurdity of a meaningful Cincinnati Reds-Pittsburgh Pirates series in August manifested itself by who is missing in the Great American Ball Park press box this weekend.

Remember how last month the Padres were giving teams one game out of the series, and then stomping on them for the rest of it? Well the Reds have given the Padres a taste of their own medicine. After winning the first game in dominant fashion, the Padres then dropped the next three to the Reds. But let's face it, the Reds are a damn good team. The Padres did give a fight though...

There was much speculation that the Reds would try to improve their lineup by going after a leadoff hitter before the trade deadline. Instead they added closer Jonathan Broxton to the bullpen with the lowest ERA in the majors. The Reds bullpen depth is quite remarkable considering the amount of injuries its suffered since before this season. Now they've added an experience right-hander.
Mat Latos was sharp tonight against the Pirates. He did not give up a run for the 7.1 innings he pitched. His stats for the night were 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Latos did this against a Pittsburgh Pirates team looking to gain some groung on the NL Central leading Cinncinatti Reds. They trail the Reds by 4.5 games with the loss tonight.

The Pirates take on the Cincinnati Reds this weekend in what could be the biggest series of the year. The two teams meet two more times this year — in Cincinnati in early September, and in Pittsburgh in late September — but considering the current standings, this is a key weekend for the Pirates to stay in the race.
Cincinnati has a 3.5 game lead over the Pirates. Best case scenario...

This weekend's three-game series between the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates is probably the most important one between these teams since the 1990 NL championship series.
The Reds have won 13 of 14 to establish baseball's best record as they host the team chasing them in the NL Central - the wild card-leading Pirates - on Friday night.
