With Xavier Nady expected to miss a good chunk of the rest of the regular season with a broken hand, the Diamondbacks needed to make a move to shore up the first base position and they did exactly that on Friday. The club announced early Friday that they signed Lyle Overbay to a contract effective immediately where the first baseman would be put on the 25-man roster. Overbay spent 2001-2003 with the Diamondbacks before he was traded during the offseason as part of the Richie Sexson deal to Milwaukee. Overbay spent two seasons in Milwaukee before he spent five seasons in Toronto. His best season came in 2006 where he hit .312 with 22 home runs and 92 RBIs and according to those involved in the Blue Jays organization, Overbay played Gold Glove caliber first base. The veteran signed a contract with Pittsburgh over the previous offseason. In 352 at-bats there, Overbay hit .227 with eight homers and 37 runs driven in.
