John Maine gutted it out till the seventh on Sunday, dropping a slew of lead bombs at the Marlins, who couldn’t get past the hurler’s impressive output.
Despite such a productive afternoon, Maine was removed from the game before the seventh. Jerry Manuel — obviously impressed by the rumblings Maine had caused thus far, but distressed by the news, could only say, “I think in the sixth inning, what he had . . . left [him]. That’s the way I can say that.”
Maine was also upset by having to void the mound.
“I had really filthy movement today,” Maine claimed, “They hadn’t been hitting the deuce all afternoon, and my dirty mustard had the Marlins quivering in their boxers all day. ”
