Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
With John Maine telling Newsday that he recieved a cortisone shot in order to make last Saturday's start against the Astros, there's a very real possiblity that tomorrow's side session could be the last time he climbs a mound this season.
Maine is going to need surgery anyway to shave down a bone spur in the back of his right shoulder, and if he is shut down early, the arthroscopic procedure could be done sooner rather than later.
That's not to say he's finished yet. If Maine can convince the Mets tomorrow that he will be effective Friday against the Marlins, maybe they'll let him give it another try. Maine apparently prevented Jerry Manuel from shutting him down permanently during a 20-minute meeting in the manager's office before Sunday's game.
But it seems the anti-inflammatory shot didn't do Maine much good, and that suggests he's going to struggle from here on out. His condition won't improve without surgery and the pain isn't going away.Remember, he's dealing with a rotator-cuff strain, too.
