Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
The Mets haven't ruled out the possibility that John Maine can still pitch important innings for them this season. The club has scheduled him to resume baseball activities for the first time since being shut down on Aug.24, beginning with playing catch Sunday John Maine to start playing catch as form of rehab.
Maine is on the 15-day disabled list because a bone spur behind his right shoulder that he said would require offseason surgery. All indications had been that he would not try to throw again this season. Even the righthander sounded resigned to that fate.
This new plan doesn't allow him the time to rebuild his arm strength and return to the starting rotation. If it goes well - not a lock by any means - Maine would pitch out of the bullpen.
"He's done absolutely nothing baseball (related)," manager Jerry Manuel said, "so he's probably still a ways away."
Four Man Rotation?: The Mets are likely to go with a four-man rotation for the next week and a half because there are two off days next week. Rookie lefty Jon Niese will probably be skipped the next two times through as the team won't need a fifth starter until Sept.15 at the earliest.
BACK IN THE SHOW: Reliever Ricardo Rincon came in to get two outs in the ninth, his first big-league appearance since April 18, 2006 with the Cardinals. He spent this season with the Mexico City Reds.... Daniel Murphy had two of the Mets' three hits against Brett Myers, both doubles. He has a seven-game hitting streak. ... catcher Ramon Castro (ankle) should be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list in the minimum amount of time and return for Friday's game.... If today's game is rained out, a day-night doubleheader would be played Sunday with 1:10 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. start times.
