The Mets expect to find out this afternoon if John Maine will be available as a reliever the final week of the regular season and, assuming they make it that far, during the playoffs.

Maine, who has been sidelined since Aug. 24 with a bone spur in his right shoulder, is scheduled to throw 15-20 pitches to a total of three batters here today in a one-inning simulation at Turner Field. It will be his first serious time on the mound since before Maine went on the disabled list.

Pitching coach Dan Warthen said Maine could be activated as soon as Monday and pitch in relief by Tuesday. At the same time, a downbeat Warthen said the odds were against Maine returning in any role this season.

"If I was to be a prognosticator, I would say the chances of him pitching are pretty slim," Warthen said before last night's opener of a three-game NL East series with the Braves.
