Yankees fans will always have fond memories of Shane Spencer. He was, for one September, their Roy Hobbs. Spencer, who nobody heard of, hit 10 home runs in 67 at bats in the September of 1998, three of them went for grand slams. It was not something anyone expected, especially with a team that only called him up to get some of the regulars healthy for an October run. That Yankees team won 114 regular season games and 125 overall after clinching their second World Series in 3 three years. These aren’t one of the teams that are generally speculated about for PED use, but someone thought it would be funny to call a local radio show and claim to be Shane Spencer and admit to rampant juicing on that Yankees squad. Per ESPN: A podcast of the interview, with host Mike Lindsley of ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team, remained on the station’s website until nearly 6 p.m. Tuesday until it was taken down after the hoax was discovered.
