I would tell you that Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado’s amazing throw to first base to throw out Luis Cruz reminded me of Brooks Robinson, but I would be lying, since I never saw Brooks Robinson play. That’s what all the old guys on Twitter were saying. Nevertheless, it is a spectactular play: Yes, had Machado fielded it cleanly it would have been a normal groundout, but the bobble gave it some extra flair. That is one strong arm to throw a guy out fall off his backfoot. It was a dart of a throw. Impressive. The Orioles beat the Yankees 2-1 after Adam Jones hit a two-run home run off Mariano Rivera in the ninth. Pick you jaw up off your desk.

  • A "normal groundout" if he'd fielded cleanly? Come on man that was a very tough chance, absolutely nothing "normal" about it.

Hot News: Baseball America concludes that the Yankee farm system is struggling: Is it us, or the system that rates systems?

Baseball American - the Mooney's Financial Rating System of baseball - has listed the Yankees as one of five organizations whose farm system had a crummy first half. Of course, this is like Arthur Anderson saying there might be a problem with Enron - (For young readers, you'll have to Google this.)Last winter, BA - as it's known in Twitter shorthand - praised the organization...

Hiroki Kuroda (7-6, 2.95 ERA) looks for a little payback sweep against Jason Hammel (7-5, 5.19 ERA) and Orioles after the Yanks were swept in Baltimore last week. Kuroda comes back to the rotation after having a start pushed back due to a sore left hip flexor. He last faced the Orioles on June 30, taking the loss after going six innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Hammel has...

Manny Machado makes the Play of MLB so far

“Oh my Gosh”-The reaction from Buck Showalter, the Baltimore Orioles Manager, after watching this play by 21-year-old Manny Machado. After Yankees third baseman Luis Cruz hit a sharp grounder down the third base line, Machado lost control of the ball after attempting to backhand it. Macho marvelously recovered to get the ball in his right hand, and while falling towards the...

Jeter goes 0 for 2 in rehab start

Derek Jeter knows it's going to take time to get back from his ankle injury, even though he'd rather be in the Bronx. "I want to play. I'm ready to play but I understand I have to play some games here," said Jeter, who finished his first rehab game with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Saturday night going 0 for 2 with a walk. "But I look forward to getting...

Manny Machado's Throw in Yankee Stadium

The Baltimore Orioles' Manny Machado turned 21-years old yesterday, while in New York for a weekend series with the Yankees. On Manny Machado's 21st birthday, he received word that he made the American League All Star team. The day after many 21st birthdays is ordinarily a lazy, hazy day filled with rest and recovery after a night of drinking and debauchery. Today, Manny...

Despite Blown Save, Yankees Have Successful Weekend

The Yankees Sunday afternoon loss to the Baltimore Orioles felt like a big deal. With Mariano Rivera on the mound after 7.0 strong shutout innings from a thankfully healthy Hiroki Kuroda, it felt like a sweep was inevitable. The standings were already recalculated in Yankees fans heads with the Yankees pulling 1.5 games ahead of the Orioles and remaining in a tie with the Tampa...

A-Rod gets plunked in rehab game

People enjoy watching Alex Rodriguez get hit with stray fastballs. We'll not explore the reasons that might be, but it does seem to be a shared experience for many many Americans. You would think that experience would not be shared by those close to the pitcher, who in throwing a bean-ball has damaged either his statistical rating or his personal reputation. But there is one...

Can Baltimore Orioles Slugger Chris Davis Break the Home Run Record?

On Saturday the Baltimore Orioles dipped a half game behind the New York Yankees in the AL East after the Bronx Bombers beat the Birds 5-4. Andy Pettitte earned his sixth win with a good (but not great performance) and Mariano Rivera closed the game out for save No. 29. But the statistic that many will be looking at beyond the win is not from one of the Yankees, but the hard-hitting...

He last faced the Royals on May 10th during the sweep, allowing six runs on seven hits...

Yankeetorial: One run per game: Let's call them the Bronx Unibombers

There's a device used by baseball official scorers to erase a meaningless stolen base in the final, meaningless inning of a game. It's called "Defensive Indifference," when the runner literally jogs to second, untouched. I think the Yankees must lead the league in DI's, because they're not only always behind, but nobody - nobody - cares.I propose a new definition...
