The Mets lost in Atlanta by a score of 5-3 tonight at Turner Field, evening the 5-game series at two games apiece heading into tomorrow’s rubber match. Shaun Marcum pitched for the Mets and battled through the first few innings before being burned by a 3-run home run off the bat of Chris Johnson. Freshly acquired Eric Young led off the game with a single for New York, but the Mets were stymied from that point on by Kris Medlen until the 5th. After Johnson built upon the tradition of Mets-Killing Atlana third basemen with the initials “CJ” by parking Marcum’s 2-out breaking ball in the left field seats in the 4th, the Mets broke through against Medlen thanks to the Atlanta pitcher’s misguided attempt to triple up John Buck. With two on and nobody out, Buck hit the baseball 60 feet back to elevated dirt slope from whence it came, where Medlen fielded it with ease. After thinking about taking the easy double play, Medlen decided to try to capitalize on Buck’s lack of speed and wheeled ...

I Wouldn’t Swap Matt Harvey For Any Other Pitcher On The Planet

Yesterday, I called Matt Harvey one the biggest bad-asses in baseball after reading about this incident that took place last season, when Jon Rauch (good riddance) decided to haze the young rookie. During his rookie season last year, Harvey was tired and decided to take a nap in a side room of the Mets’ clubhouse. One of baseball’s stupid decrees goes something like: Rookies...

Plawecki Homers, Drives In Four In St. Lucie Debut

Catcher Kevin Plawecki slammed a two-out, three-run homer in his first at-bat with Advanced-A St. Lucie last night, who beat Palm Beach by the score of 8-6. The 2012 first round draft pick added an RBI-double and went 2-for-5 with four RBIs in the game. Plawecki, Jayce Boyd and Bret Mitchell had been promoted from Savannah to St. Lucie before the game which you can read below....

Niese Left Game With “Left Shoulder Discomfort”

Jon Niese was just removed from the game in the fourth inning with an apparent shoulder injury. He was replaced by David Aardsma. After throwing his 61st pitch of the game, Niece winced in pain. He then motioned to the Mets dugout for the trainers to come out, pointed to his shoulder, and within a minute they all walked off the mound. Niese has been bothered recently by what the...

Mets P Zach Wheeler doused with beer by teammates after sparkling debut (video)

An unfamiliar feeling of hope for the future resonated all around the New York Mets at Turner Field on Tuesday after two young, hard-throwing arms in the team’s starting rotation came out with brilliant pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep of the Atlanta Braves. First up was Matt Harvey, who had yet another brilliant [...]The post Mets P Zach Wheeler doused with beer...

Jon Niese leaves game with shoulder discomfort

credit: getty images Mets starter Jon Niese only made it to the fourth inning of his start on Thursday night before leaving with shoulder discomfort. Niese pitched 3 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out five. He had been dealing with shoulder tendinitis. The Mets had been planning to go with a six-man rotation with the arrival...

Mets 6, Braves 1

After a long day at Turner Field, the future suddenly looks a lot brighter for the New York Mets. Just imagine Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler at the top of the rotation for years to come. ''I hope people saw this,'' said manager Terry Collins, no doubt referring to New York's long-suffering NL fans. ''Certainly they're going to enjoy watching these...

Matt Harvey, Overwhelming

Matt Harvey didn’t throw a no-hitter against the Braves on Tuesday, but he did almost do that, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the seventh. It’s not that Harvey relied entirely on the strikeout — of the batters he faced, 13 didn’t whiff. But then, of the batters he faced, 13 did whiff, and Harvey’s season rate is verging on 30%. Matt Harvey was already good a year...

New York Mets Second Basemen: Positional Study

This is my second article in an occasional series in which I will look at the way that a single franchise has filled a single position over the course of time: stars and stopgaps, free agents and trades, hot prospects and positional conversions. Last time, I examined Atlanta Braves centerfielders. This week, I will look at another up-the-middle position for another National League...

With Leather’s Watch This: Zack Wheeler Probably Smells Like Beer

Your browser does not support iframes.Despite Bob Costas’ best efforts to kill all baseball fun in the name of saving our society for future generations, the New York Mets had two reasons to be very excited during their doubleheader wins over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. In the first game, phenom Matt Harvey finally got some run support from his teammates as he earned his sixth...
