These early exits by Shaun Marcum are not what the Mets had in mind when they signed him last winter.
Garrett Jones hit a three-run homer off Marcum - a call that was correctly overturned by baseball's beleaguered umpires - and Wandy Rodriguez pitched the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-3 victory over New York on Friday night.
Marcum (0-3) looked uncomfortable on the mound and worked deliberately all night. He has failed to get through the fifth inning in any of his three starts for the Mets since beginning the season on the disabled list.
''I think Shaun tried to hurry through the rehab and get up here because he knew we needed help,'' manager Terry Collins said. ''I think we've got to run him out there again because, as I said the last start, he's basically towards the end of spring training.''
Marcum had three 1-2-3 innings but still gave up six runs and nine hits. He also hit two batters with pitches.
