New York Mets starter Shaun Marcum will make his debut for the team at home this Saturday against 22-year-old rookie Jonathan Pettibone and the Philadelphia Phillies.  The 31-year-old Marcum turned in another impressive rehab performance yesterday, after which time he was deemed healthy for his long awaited Mets debut. #bbpBox_326382449812717568 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_326382449812717568 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } Marcum with another scoreless outing today on the back fields. As long as he emerges healthy, he seems on track to debut Saturday. #Mets April 22, 2013 1:10 pm via Twitter for AndroidReplyRetweetFavorite @AnthonyDiComo Anthony DiComo #bbpBox_326789434903252992 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_326789434903252992 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } Marcum will indeed make his #Mets debut Saturday. As you now know, starts Saturday vs. #Phillies in his #Mets debut. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin According to Jorge Castillo of the Star-Ledger, Mets manager Terry Collins said Marcum “came through great.” Marcum, 31, opened the season on the disabled list due neck and shoulder injuries. He signed for one year and $4 million over the offseason. The veteran right-hander will provide some reinforcement for an overmatched backend to the Mets’ starting rotation. He will replace Aaron Laffey, who was designated for assignment Sunday after posting a 4.20 ERA in four appearances, two of which were starts.” Photo by Michael G. Baron As I wrote the other day, the Mets not only need Marcum back, they need him to be good, they need him to pitch deep into games, and they need him to stay healthy.  Zack Wheeler has not stepped up to the challenge in Las Vegas and when Jon Niese was pulled from the game yesterday it was very easy to see just how thin the starting rotation is at this point in the season.  At some point it won’t matter whether or not Marcum is rolling the ball to the plate, the Mets are going to have to get some innings from him.  Hopefully Saturday is the start of successful and only partially limited 2013 campaign.
