21 Oct 1998: Pitcher Mariano Rivera #42 and catcher Joe Girardi #25 of the New York Yankees celebrate following the 1998 World Series Game 4 against the San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. The Yankees defeated the Padres 3-0.
In the final season of his storied career, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera has pitched one of his best seasons to date. However, Tuesday night’s match-up against crosstown rival New York Mets would serve as the first major setback for the future hall of famer this season. With a 1-0 lead heading into the ninth inning, Rivera entered the game and surrendered a ground rule double to Daniel Murphy to start the inning. David Wright would follow with an RBI single, scoring Murphy and tying the game 1-1.After reaching second base on an errant throw by Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner, Wright would come around to score the game winning run on an RBI single by Lucas Duda. The Mets’ 2-1 victory would serve as Rivera’s first blown save (and loss) of the season, and his first since April 6 (opening day) last season.Mets ace Matt Harvey pitched as strong game despite earning a no-decision, working eight innings of one-run ball, striking out 10 batters and surrendering no walks. Despite the Mets’ loss, Harvey remains a perfect 5-0 on the season. The Mets have now won three straight games en route to a 20-29 record, wherein they sit fourth in the NL East standings, 10 games behind the division leading Atlanta Braves.
