New York Yankees’ closer Mariano Rivera recorded save number 602 yesterday to break Trevor Hoffman’s all-time mark. Rivera now joins the exclusive club of Major League Baseball record holders whose mark should never be broken. If you think about it this way, any new closer coming up would have to average 40 saves per season for 15 years just to reach 600 and fall two saves short as of now. Rivera is not through, and could conceivably add another 40 or 50 saves to his already unbeatable record before he retires. The 602 saves does not include any of Rivera’s clutch saves in the postseason. Out of those 602 regular season saves, 116 of them came in more than one inning of work. That is the most since 1994. Keith Foulke is second on that list with 55, which is less than half for those who are mathematically impaired.
