According to reports first detailed by the New York Post it looks like tomorrow New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will announce his plans to retire after the 2013 season. Rivera did not have a great season last year when he tore his ACL in his right knee. There were even reports that he would have retired last year, but when he got injured, that changed his mind. Rivera who is 43 years old will leave the game of baseball with many records one being the all-time saves leader. He has a total of 42 postseason saves to go along with his five World Series titles he won with the Yankees. Yankees manager Joe Girardi has no doubt Rivera is the greatest closer off all time. He told reporters, “There is no question in my mind. I have had the thrill of catching him. I was really there when he burst on to the scene and he was a dominant setup man, and then to see what he did as a closer was a thrill for me. I know there is a press conference on Saturday, and we’ll go from there.” Hank Steinbrenner when asked about whether or not Mariano would come back as a trainer or coach for the Yankees he said, “If he wants to, that would be my preference. I think he’d be a great influence, even if it’s only at spring training.” Even Ichiro Suzuki gave his thoughts on Mariano by saying, “A lot of people over the years have asked, especially when I go back to Japan, ‘Who is the guy that you don’t want to face, or the toughest guy to face?’ He was probably the guy who would come up at the top of my list.” So Yankee fans will anxiously wait for tomorrow to see if Rivera does announce his retirement. When someone of that stature leaves the game people are always looking for the next guy to replace that big void. In this case no one will ever really have a shot of filling that roster spot.
