M’s Injury Update

Yesterday we brought you the news out of Seattle Mariners spring training on the Gutierrez pectoral issue.

Today Franklin Gutierrez’s injury has escalated to what Manager Eric Wedge has described as “Considerable Concern” and has been flown to Seattle for more extensive examinations with the team doctors.

When throwing a ball from centerfield to third base, before an intersquad game, it was evident that Gutierrez did not have normal throwing strength.

After a second throw he was ushered off the field and taken away to have an MRI.

The M’s organization has been quiet on the results of the test but has obviously felt the need to escalate their response in sending him back to the Northwest.

A pectoral injury is not completely unheard of in baseball, but it is rare.  What was being reported prior to this event was the considerable muscle weight that the Mariners centerfielder gained during the offseason.

This injury may be a result of the very training he was doing to improve.

M's have escalated their response to the Gutierrez pectoral injury...

The problem is possibly a concern over too much muscle too fast without the necessary adjustments to playing style.

Guti was set to have a comeback year after a disappointing season dealing with illness and injury.

The Mariners drastic response to this turn of events could be a result of the extensive problems that Guti had in the past and wanting to make triple-sure that he really is able to continue or be shut down and nurtured back to health.

This injury may be a non-issue, but should be addressed by the team later in the week.

In an interesting side note, Chone Figgins took Guti’s place in Center Field for the intersquad game, a position he has not played since 2006 but has over 245 career starts in the yard.

This is another way that the M’s are trying to increase Figgins versatility and value.
