Helloooooo Billy!

July 6-8

The Seattle Mariners ends the first half of their season the way they started it: against Oakland.

The M’s were supposed to be a better team than their division rivals this year, but coming into the All Star break the Mariners are in the basement of the AL west yet again looking up into the butt cheeks of the A’s

Pitching match ups: Game 85: RHP – Kevin Millwood vs. LHP – Tommy Milone

Millwood missed his last start due to the fact he was licking his wounds.  Which is bad when you have a groin injury.

Oakland Athletics Logo Mariners vs Athletics In Oakland: Pitching, series preview, analysis & predictions

Athletics

After a rough start to the season, Kevin Millwood has pulled his ERA to 4.00 matching his career 4.10 nicely.  It is good to know what to expect.  The 37-year-old pitcher has pitched better on the road (3.10 ERA) this year than at home (5.29).

  • * Millwood’s last start was against Oakland but he pitched only 2.2 innings before having to return to the nursing home.
  • * Current line: 3-6 / 4.00 ERA / 62 BB / 89 SO / 1.36 WHIP

Milone may not be having a miracle season as a rookie, but he has shown good stuff as a young lefty, especially at home where he is 5-1 at with a 0.99 ERA.  The Mariners are hitting only .234 against Milone going into their third match up against him this first half of the season.

  • * Current Line: 8-6 / 3.73 ERA / 24 BB / 63 SO / 1.19 WHIP
  • * Eyes fall on Jesus Montero to improve on his .667 Batting Average against the Oakland hurler
Game 86: LHP – Jason Vargas vs. RHP – Jarrod Parker

At 7-7 and a 4.31 ERA, one wonders what sort of trade value the southpaw could get for the M’s.  With losing Erasmo Ramirez to the DL and optioning Noesi to Tacoma the M’s may have tipped their hand of their intentions to keep Jason Vargas on through the rebuilding process.

  • * Vargas is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA against Oakland in 3 starts this season
  • * Oakland batters are hitting just .161 against Jason

Jarrod Parker is another bright spot for the Oakland Moneyballers (which they should totally change their name to by the way).  His 2.46 ERA is impressive but he has given up 39 walks to 61 strike outs for a total of about 4.4 per nine inning game.

  • * His first appearance against Seattle was bad for M’s fans who watched their team combine for an average of 1.25
  • * Parker is 2-1 in 7 starts at Overstock.com Coliseum with a 1.54 ERA
Game 87: RHP – Felix Hernandez vs. RHP – Bartolo Colon

Felix should be excited to pitch in this game before heading off to the All-Star game in Kansas City as Seattle’s lone representative.

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics Series Preview and Predictions

After a rough first half there really is no place to go but up.

Right?

Well the point is a good mood should help him play well.

  • * Current Line: 6-5 / 3.26 ERA / 32 BB / 122 SO / 1.23 WHIP

Bartolo Colon is always entertaining to watch.  If you were to see him walking down the street and were given 1000 guesses as to his career, professional athlete wouldn’t even be on your radar.

He helps give hopes to the masses that average old, fat, controversial, loud mouth can make it big in this country.

  • * Current line 6-7 / 4.05 ERA / 17 BB / 58 SO / 1.29 WHIP
M’s VS A’s Series Predictions

Game 1:

The M’s could kill Milone at home where he has been dominate all season.  The M’s could also win the world series this year.  That is if you throw out every self respecting bit of rationality in your way. Prediction:  Loss (A’s 2 – M’s 1)

Game 2:

Vargas should pitch like his job depends on it.  Meaning if he wants to stay in Seattle, he should lose. Prediction: Loss (A’s 5 – M’s 0)

Game 3:

Two Cy Young award winners squaring off?  Sounds like a party. Prediction: Win (A’s 0 – M’s 1)

Extras

The Mariners sent struggling RH Hector Noesi to the minors on Thursday and recalled OF Carlos Peguero from Triple-A.

Oakland’s starters have posted a 1.89 ERA in the last 20 games.

Moss has 10 home runs in 24 games since joining the A’s and has driven in at least one run in four straight.

Iwakuma will enter Mariners' revamped rotation after break

The Seattle Mariners will be reworking their rotation to begin the second half of the season. Just what form that revamping will take hasn't been completely determined. Manager Eric Wedge said that Hisashi Iwakuma would move into the rotation after the break. He'll be taking the spot that had belonged to Hector Noesi. "Iwakuma will start after the break,"...

Fences aren't cause of Mariners' offensive home woes

When Safeco Field was first put into operation after the All-Star break in 1999, it was immediately evident that it was a pitcher's park and that it was particularly tough on right-handed batters. There has been sporadic talk since then that perhaps things needed to be equalized, possibly by moving the fences in. That talk has heated up this year with the Seattle Mariners...

Mariners are finding several homes away from home

Road Warriors The phrase “Home Sweet Home” is one of the most popular phrases in the English language. In sports, that saying holds especially true. When playing at home in front of your fans, you are expected to do well. Having a home crowd to cheer you on is supposed to be electrifying and help boost your performance. The 2012 Seattle Mariners are bucking that trend. While...

Mariners 7, Athletics 1

Jason Vargas pitched a seven-hitter to win for the first time in more than a month, and the Seattle Mariners snapped Oakland's five-game winning streak with a 7-1 victory Saturday night. Kyle Seager hit a bases-loaded double to drive in three, Brendan Ryan added a two-RBI double in the second and Ichiro Suzuki singled up the middle in the fifth to snap a career-worst 0-for-23...

Losing Hernandez Not Inevitable

Baseball in July means trade talk. Trade talk in Seattle means Felix Hernandez talk. Practically every baseball insider has given their opinion that dealing Felix isn't only the best option for Seattle, but that it is the only option. SeattleClubhouse examines this notion with a look at what lies ahead for the Mariners.

Should Seattle Mariners’ Ace Felix Hernandez Be An All-Star?

Felix Hernandez is an All-Star again and will be traveling to the mid-summer classic in Kansas City next week to perform on a national stage. Hernandez is now a three time All-Star and in his eighth season with the Mariners. King Felix is the obvious choice. He is the face of the organization and is [...]

Game-winning homer extends Carter's hot start for A's

Before Friday's game against the Seattle Mariners, Oakland A's first baseman Chris Carter homered off rehabbing left-hander Brett Anderson, who was throwing to hitters for the first time since May. A sign of sorts? Carter came off the bench in the 11th inning to hit a game-winning three-run homer at the Coliseum, lifting Oakland to a 4-1 win over Seattle. It was the third...

Shared positions are the norm for A's

Brandon Moss has hit 10 homers in 24 games with the Oakland A's -- and he's in a platoon at first base. Moss, who was the AL Player of the Week last month after hitting five homers in a four-game span, is now sharing time with rookie Chris Carter -- at least through the All-Star break. The A's then must assess if they want a longtime top prospect such as Carter to remain...

Mike Zunino Has Good Week; Signs With Seattle Mariners, Wins Golden Spikes Award

Former Florida Gators star Mike Zunino would probably classify this week as a good one. He might even go as far as to say it was a great one. In a matter of days, Zunino signed his first big league deal with the Seattle Mariners and followed that up by winning the Golden Spikes Award. Zunino broke a record of sorts when the Mariners selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the...

Athletics 4, Mariners 1(11)

Chris Carter hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning, powering the Oakland Athletics past the Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Friday night to match a season-high five-game winning streak. Carter sent the 0-1 pitch from Steve Delabar deep into the stands in left field to bring the A's back to .500 for the first time since May 22. The hit was Carter's first walk-off...

Zunino Wins Golden Spikes Award

The awards continue to roll in. Florida All-American catcher Mike Zunino secured another big honor on Friday afternoon when USA Baseball announced that the Seattle Mariners signee won the 2012 Golden Spikes Award.

Mariners-Athletics Preview

Oakland's Tommy Milone has been outstanding at home. If he can continue his dominant pitching there, he should have a good chance to get the surging Athletics back to .500 for the first time in six weeks. Milone and the A's open a three-game series Friday night against the Mariners, who should be very happy to temporarily leave the spacious dimensions of Safeco Field. Oakland...
