2. Iwakuma’s Strong StartHisashi Iwakuma continues to defy expectations with his starts.
This time he went six strong on 88 pitches. He allowed two runs—one earned—on seven hits and no walks. He struck out three.
The Japanese import now moves to 8-5 on the season. His ERA has been lowered to 3.32, and while he remains hittable he’s continuing to show great control on the mound.
3. Ackley’s Nice NightAfter two subpar games since returning from injury, Dustin Ackley finale strung together a nice night at the plate.
He did only go 1-4 at the plate, but he also had a walk. He also did exactly what you want from your leadoff man, scoring two runs throughout the night. Good to have you back in the swing of things No. 13.
Hate ‘em 1. Capps Burned AgainOnce again Eric Wedge uses Carter Capps to pitch multiple innings, and once again the young flamethrower gets burned.
He was solid through his first inning, pitching a perfect seventh with two strikeouts. Then when asked to go a second inning he runs into trouble, allowing two runners on, both of whom would later score.
Capps has the chance to be a fantastic reliever—maybe even closer—but only if Wedge lets up on how he’s using him.
2. Gutierrez Hurt… AgainOnce again Franklin Gutierrez is hurt. And once again it comes off an aggressive catch in center field.
I love Guti’s defense, and as far as I’m concerned he’s a core player moving forward with the organization. But if he’s only playing a handful of games a season what’s the point?
There’s a line between great defense and over aggressive defense. Gutierrez walked that line last night with a beautiful running catch to rob Mike Trout of a hit. Unfortunately he collided with the wall and had to leave for the rest of the game.
I love his game, but if he’s never on the field what does it matter?
3. Seager Finale Gets an RBIUsually this kind of thing would be something to love. But Seager’s recent stretch has been so ugly this is a hate—because things should never have gotten this bad.
Kyle Seager leads the team with 82 RBI. He’s been a huge surprise this season, and a mainstay in the middle of the order.
He’s also been horribly inconsistent, as evidenced by his recent 13 games without an RBI. Well he finally broke that streak with a seventh inning single against L.A.. About time.
Notes:Albert Pujols and Kendrys Morales each had a pair of doubles for the Angels.
Seattle OF Casper Wells had two hits for the second time in five games.
The Angels are 10-6 against the Mariners in 2012. They will travel to Seattle for the final three games of the season Oct. 1-3.
