There are very players in history who have benefited more from using performance-enhancing drugs than Mark McGwire.McGwire, 49, captured the imagination and souls of baseball fans everywhere in the late-1990s by crushing tape-measure home runs game-after-game. The public didn't know it at the time, but McGwire's amazing display of power was aided by more than just natural ability. In 2010, before becoming the hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010, McGwire finally came clean and admitted that he used steroids during his playing career. Now, on the same day Major League Baseball suspended 13 players for using performance-enhancing drugs, the current Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach said he wishes he never got caught up in using PEDs at all."I wish I was never a part of it," McGwire said. "Just get rid of it. If it's better to have bigger suspensions, then they're going to have to change it."McGwire is arguably the face of the "steroids era" and his admission to using them is the main reason he has yet to gain the necessary votes to gain induction into the Hall of Fame."I wish there were things in place earlier," McGwire said. "They were put in in 2003 I think. I just really hope and pray that this is the end of it. Everybody, especially the players, don't want any more part of it and I hope this is the end of it. ... I wish I was never part of it."McGwire added, "It's not worth it at all."All in all, the slugger smacked 583 home runs in his big league career, which ranks 10th on the sport's all-time list. However, nearly half of his home runs (284) came between 1996 and 1999, which is during the same time frame that McGwire was allegedly juicing. So, although McGwire claims he wishes he was never part of the steroid mess, there has to be some part of him that realizes how important they were to the success of his career. Just don't expect him to ever publicly admit that.Via ESPN
