I’m not sure if you all caught the game on MASN on Wednesday night, but the cameras panned to Nick Markakis – who was standing on the railing of the dugout – and he had some bandages wrapped around his wrist. That image didn’t look good and you knew immediately that he was going to miss some time.

Wrist injuries are often tricky; therefore, the Orioles have placed Nick Markakis on the disabled list. According to the Baltimore Sun’s Eduardo A. Encina, the right-fielder is schedule to have surgery on his wrist.

He has a broken bone.

Considering that Nick Markakis is one of their bigger bats in the lineup and has stayed relatively healthy throughout his career, it’s big a letdown. Furthermore, with the Orioles struggling – having lost five straight games and three series in a row – on the offensive front, Markakis’ injury came at the worst time possible.

Starting right fielder Nick Markakis will miss two to four weeks with a broken bone in his right wrist and make his first trip to the disabled list in his major league career.

Markakis suffered a fractured hamate bone and is scheduled to have surgery Friday morning performed by nationally renowned hand specialist Dr. Brian Schofield in Sarasota, Fla.

“It’s actually better than I thought,” Showalter said. “If I woke up and knew I would have been told this, I would have signed up for it in blood.”

Showalter said the injury occurred about 7 to 10 days ago when Markakis’ hand got caught behind him while making a slide into second base.

Markakis had pain in his wrist, but it went away without further incident. Apparently a complete break occurred on a common swing in Markakis’ final at-bat Tuesday. Markakis missed his first game of the season Wednesday, his hand and wrist wrapped tightly.

Markakis’ procedure Friday is a relatively simple one, Showalter said. The broken bone will be removed entirely. The recovery time is mainly just for the surgery itself.

It will be interesting to see who the Orioles bring up from the minors. Hopefully whatever player they decide to bring up can at fill Markakis’ shoes – offensively and defensively.
