Mark Buehrle allowed three earned runs in his final exhibition tuneup, and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets 6-5 Saturday.
Buehrle gave up seven hits and four runs overall in 5 1-3 innings. He finished his first spring training with the Marlins with a 6.62 ERA.
Miguel Batista, who learned Friday he had made the team as a long reliever and spot starter, allowed a solo homer to Hanley Ramirez in the second inning. Batista pitched two innings.

Mets News and Notes: Torres, Byrdak, Minor League Releases
Outfielder Andres Torres played center field in a Minor League game Saturday for the first time since straining his left calf 12 days ago. Torres is scheduled to make another Minor League appearance Sunday, with the Mets still hopeful that he will avoid a disabled list stint to start the season.
Left-handed reliever Tim Byrdak walked a batter and allowed two runs in a Minor...
Things Aren’t As Bleak As They Seem For The 2012 Mets
With the Mets first game under a week away, fans and analysts write this season as a disappointment already without it even starting. Realistically the 2012 New York Mets wont be playing in any games of relevance deep into the summer and to the early parts of the fall. Though that doesn’t mean the team wont be exciting at times with their injection of young talent.
With guys...
Mets Curse? Jason Bay The Modern Day Roberto Alomar?
Throughout spring training, I have heard interviews and read many articles about Jason Bay and his approach to hitting. Every Mets fan, let alone baseball fan knows of Bay's woes. For someone who was a solid power hitter before joining the Mets, with the Mets he has been more of a power outage. This spring Bay is trying to simplify his approach, and get back to his hitting basics...
For Miami fans, The New Marlins Ballpark refreshes and excites
Who here has watched baseball in a sauna? Squeezed between a sweaty old man and a three hundred pound lady spilling nachos? Who’s only shot at refreshment was the last $9 in your pocket for a beer that grew lukewarm if you didn’t chug like a college freshman? Unless your dream baseball experience was sweating out free radicals and heading home from the game smelling...
Will the new-look Marlins eventually combust this season?

The Marlins have a new name, a new stadium, a new manager, and a new star, but will any of it translate into victories in 2012?

Mets will make decision Sunday if Johan Santana will start opener
Saturday morning Mets Pitching Coach Dan Warthen was doing his best impressions of Atlanta's batters and Santana was delivering the pitches. Though Santana was still not ready to christen himself ready for Opening Day after his penultimate tuneup of the spring, an up-and-down bullpen session at Port St. Lucie, the Mets plan to make a final decision on Sunday.
If Santana does...
Mets thinking about signing Jon Niese long term
The Mets have talked about locking up a pitcher they believe could anchor their rotation for years to come.
The team has entered serious discussions on a long-term contract extension with left-hander Jon Niese, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
The person requested anonymity because no deal was official. The negotiations were first reported by ESPN New York.

The 1962 Mets vs. The 2012 Mets
In the Mets first season in 1962 the team won only 40 games and lost 120. It was one of the worst team records in MLB history. Now, we all know that you can never go by Spring Training number or stats. BUT...with the Mets only chalking up 7 wins so far this Spring in 35 games...if they carry this win/loss ratio in the regular season...they may only win 35 games all year! What a lovely tribute

I threatened to bug you about this again on Friday, and here we are.
With Leather is teaming up with Fanduel.com to bring you a free fantasy baseball event that could earn you a huge wad of $1,000 in cash simply for picking someone who’d be better at baseball on April 5 than Omar Infante. He’s on my time. So are a bunch of guys who are gonna get hurt on April 4. I’m not...
Mets Nearing Five-Year Extension With Jon Niese
According to ESPN New York, the Mets and Jon Niese are on the verge of agreeing to a five-year deal with options for 2017 and 2018. The deal is believed to be very similar to the five-year, $28.5 million contract Derek Holland and the Rangers came to terms on last month.
The two camps are still negotiating a price tag says Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal, but are not far...
Miami Marlins Season Preview
There is a ton of buzz around the all new Miami Marlins heading into 2012. They’ve got a new stadium, a new manager, new colors and uniforms, and a bunch of new players including a new superstar. They staged a coup of sorts this winter, shedding their reputation as penny pinchers en route to making a number of major big money free agent acquisitions The Marlins inked All-Star...
3 Up and 3 Down: Ready Or Not, Here It Comes…
With opening day less than a week away, it’s time to weigh in with a brand new edition of “3 Up & 3 Down”. Here’s what I’m looking forward to in 2012, the 50th anniversary season of New York Mets Baseball!
3 Up:
The Return of Johan Santana:One word comes to mind when I think of Johan Santana; warrior. Who could forget Santana’s performance against the Marlins a...
When does the pen become a concern
Photo by Michael BaronAfter a season in which too many winnable games were lost to blown saves and/or failed holds, the one area the front office addressed was the bullpen.Frank Francisco, Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez were suppose to be the strong part of the roster. If Parnell, Acosta and Byrdak could be decent the pen on paper looks deeper then it has been in years. But as one...
2012 Mets Rotation Announced
The Mets announced today that the starting rotation will be Santana, Dickey, Niese, Pelfrey and Gee.
It’s common knowledge that the only time the rotation really matters in a sense of ace on ace matchups is April. Starting in May the matchups will start to get mixed up. There is also the looming idea on the horizon of adding a sixth man into the rotation as a way to decrease the...
