A Miami Marlins split squad featuring a mostly minor league lineup was dominated by the New York Mets on Wednesday.   The only regular starter in the lineup was Gaby Sanchez as the Mets won 7-0 to hand the Marlins their second straight defeat in the Grapefruit League.    After the loss, the fish stand at 1-2 this Spring excluding exhibition contests against colleges.

Sean West who may be entering his final weeks as a member of the Marlins’ organization allowed three runs on four hits in only one and two thirds innings.   The tall lefty who is out of options will most likely be exposed to waivers at some point this Spring.   While Wednesday’s effort will not determine that, it certainly is not a good start to a Spring where West needs to show the Marlins a lot.  Tom Koehler fared much better tossing two and a third perfect innings of relief in what was his first Spring appearance as a 40-man roster member.    Rob Rasmussen, Corey Madden, Rob Delaney, and Alejandro Ramos pitched in this one.   It is likely that none of the six pitchers in this game start the year on the big league roster.   Koehler has the best chance of a call-up during the season as of now.

The quiet Grapefruit League offense for the Marlins continued in this game as they only compiled four hits.   Outside of Sanchez who went 0-2, Chris Coghlan saw his first action of the spring and went 0-3.     Austin Kearns who is vying for a reserve outfield spot as a non-roster invitee picked up a single while Scott Cousins who is more likely to head to New Orleans struck out in both of his at-bats in this game.

The Marlins will take on Florida International University on Wednesday night at Marlins Park with Ricky Nolasco scheduled to make the start.   On Thursday, the Marlins will travel to Port St. Lucie for a rematch with the Mets.
