Miami Marlins hitting coach Tino Martinez has resigned over allegations he grabbed a player around the neck and neck chain. Martinez had tried to resign earlier this month but owner Jeffrey Loria nixed the idea the Miami Herald reported.
After publicity of the incident spread this weekend Martinez officially resigned Sunday afternoon.
The Herald said the player in question is 2B Derek Dietrich who was demoted to the minors last week. His agent David Meter contacted the team about the alleged incident which took place months ago sources told the Herald.
But Meter declined to answer questions saying it was a "team issue."
A team spokesman said “I’m sure if there is an issue it will be addressed.”
Dietrich is not the only player who has felt Martinez's wrath the newspaper reports. Sources say the former MLB first baseman has been verbally abusive to a number of players dating back to spring training in February. This is his first year as hitting coach for the Marlins.
