Way back on Tuesday of this week (which seems so long ago as the rumors continue to pile up), Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the Miami Marlins had made free-agent shortstop Jose Reyes a contract offer worth $90 million over 6-years.  While some believed the New York Mets could ‘play’ at around that price range, others speculated that if this offer were considered to be a true starting point for what will undoubtedly be a competitive market, then the team would have little chance to bring back Reyes.

As it turns out, the price that most believed to have set the early market for the 28-year-old’s services, may not be as enticing as initially reported.  According to Jon Heyman of SI.com:

The Miami Marlins are said to have a good feeling about their chances to sign Jose Reyes. But even they know they will have to do better than what was described as a “preliminary” offer. Sources suggest it was actually less than the reported $90 million over six years by $10-to-20 million.”

Doesn’t take much to figure out that we’re now looking at an offer of $70-$80 million if Heyman’s sources are correct, which just seems ridiculously low unless the length of the contract was also off.  Joel Sherman tweeted last week that $100 million would be the minimum target for Reyes and Heyman goes on to write that “Miami is thought to be eventually willing to come up to $90-to-100 million on a five-year deal.”  In the end the price may be right and Reyes may end up a Marlin, but this just goes to show how early on in the process we are and how little we really know.  Keep the salt handy, because all these reports should be taken with a grain.
