The Marlins felt that Yelich's unhappiness would have affected other players. Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins continue to embarrass themselves. But more than that, they continue to have no shame in doing so.

The latest instance comes in the form of the recently-traded Christian Yelich. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Marlins thought they needed to trade Yelich. But it’s the reason why they felt this way that makes the entire thing sickening.

The Marlins felt more urgency to trade Christian Yelich than J.T. Realmuto, who also has asked for a trade, because they believed Yelich could become a sour presence in the clubhouse if he wasn’t traded, according to someone with direct knowledge of the team’s thinking.

Interesting. It’s almost as though gutting the team doesn’t come without consequences. If the Marlins truly did believe that their actions would have zero negative consequences, they are willfully ignorant at best. So far, the Marlins have dealt Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, Marcell Ozuna and Yelich. Of all those moves, however, only Yelich would yield a positive return (on paper). Moving Stanton comes down to money. So do most of their other moves.

The new ownership group of the Marlins knows exactly what they’re doing. But now Yelich finds himself on the Milwaukee Brewers. If he’s looking to win, he’s in a much better situation. But if you ask his agent, it’s definitely bittersweet.

He loves the city of Miami. He loves the fans. He’s had nothing but a good experience in South Florida, and he feels sorry where they ended up. But I think having him report (to spring training) and attempting to include him moving forward is going to be uncomfortable for both sides.”

His agent is absolutely right. But that doesn’t make the Marlins the good guys here. Not by a long shot.
