Later today, voting will begin to determine Major League Baseball’s Face of the MLB. It all started when MLB Network asked fans to choose who they felt was the face of their franchise. When each teams fans were finished speaking, the face of each franchise were put into brackets for a win-or-go-home heads-up vote against another teams representative, with the each league’s MVP getting a first round bye. The field has been shaved down to two remaining competitors: Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds. Votto, 29, first had to beat the Face of the Minnesota Twins, Joe Mauer. After completing that task, he squeaked out a victory over the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter to make it to the Final Four against the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen. He beat McCutchen handily by a 4-1 margin. Matt Kemp, 28, began his journey against established staff ace for the Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez and young superstar shortstop Starlin Castro of the Chicago Cubs before facing off in a Southern California showdown with the Angels’ rookie phenom, Mike Trout in a tight battle to the very end that gave Matt Kemp his spot in the Final Four against the Atlanta Braves’ Jason Heyward. Jason Heyward jumped out to what seemed like an insurmountable lead early on. When I first checked in the morning, Kemp trailed 93-7. However, Dodger fans from around the world rallied on twitter and kept chipping away at the lead. At one in the morning, just two-and-a-half hours before voting ended, Matt Kemp finally overtook Jason Heyward once and for all. When all the dust settled and the Braves fans woke up shocked to see that the ten point lead they had when they went to sleep had evaporated, it was too late for them to fight back. Matt Kemp won 52-48. Now, beginning today, Kemp faces off against Votto in a five-day vote by fans on Twitter. While Joey Votto is expected to open up an early lead because the Reds play in the Eastern time zone and their fans will wake up earlier, the Dodger faithful will surely be out in full force as well. To vote for Matt Kemp, you will need to send a tweet to @MLBNetwork that contains the hashtags “#MattKemp” and “#FaceOfMLB”. You can send as many tweets as you want, but only one hashtag per message will count. So, please go out and show your support to Matt Kemp and vote as much as you can and urge your friends and family to vote as well. And while you are out there voting, please be sure to follow me at @MattRogina and follow Dodgers Rumors at @dodgersrumors.
