The last two or three years have been strange ones for Phillies outfielder John Mayberry Jr. He has gone though spurts of looking like a solid ballplayer and even more spurts of looking totally lost at the plate. While see-sawing between the two extremes, Mayberry has been unable to stick as an everyday player. But last night against the Marlins, Mayberry had probably the most memorable night of his career and he did not even start the game. He hit a solo homer in the 10th to tie the game back up after Antonio Bastardo surrendered a run to the Fish in the top of the inning. Then in the 11th, Mayberry whacked a game-winning grand slam home run. There were a number of ‘firsts’ for Mayberry in this game: - Mayberry’s first career grand slam - Mayberry became first player in major-league history to hit two home runs in extra innings with one being a grand slam - Mayberry also became the first Phillies player to hit a walk-off grand slam since Dale Murphy on Aug. 6, 1991, against the Cub...

Mayberry’s 2 HR, Walkoff Grand Slam, Give Phils 7-3 Win

John Mayberry Jr, take a bow. You are the hero tonight. Mayberry smashed a game-tying home run to lead off the 10th inning. He then walked off with a grand slam in the 11th, giving the Phillies a crazy, weird, unbelievable 7-3 win over the Marlins. The last extra-inning, walkoff grand slam was by Dale Murphy August 6, 1991 vs. the Cubs in the 11th inning. Historic. Wild. Weird. A...

Charlie Manuel, 69 Years Old, Says Umpire Bob Davidson, 60, Is ‘Getting a Little Old’

Growing old is a difficult thing to deal with, but it seems that Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel is in complete denial about his senior citizen status. On Tuesday, the Phillies beat the Marlins 7-3 thanks to John Mayberry‘s 11th inning heroics. However, up until that point the big play of the game was an apparently botched interference call by umpire Bob Davidson against...

Phillies Reporter Sigourney McCleaf Says Naughty Word That Rhymes With Squat By Accident

It has to be tough to break into broadcasting. Getting that chance when you are young and just starting out has be excited and cause for a few nerves to say the least--nerves that can make you say something you really wish you hadn't. Like the social media reporter for the Philadelphia Phillies at PHL 17 did recently when she meant to say 'twister' and said '*...

The Philadelphia Phillies are on the verge of climbing over .500 for the first time this season after sweeping one last-place team. About Yesterday: Phillies claw way back to .500, now what?

Everything seemed to go according to plan yesterday afternoon as the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the lowly Miami Marlins. Cole Hamels pitched a strong seven innings and the offense provided enough of a cushion in the later innings to assure him an elusive second win fueled by a Ryan Howard triple and a Domonic Brown home run. The extra breathing room also...

Phils Beat Brewers For Fifth Straight Win

Ryan Howard’s first inning sac fly started the scoring for the Phils. (Photo: AP) It’s June 6, and the Phillies are finally over .500. Soak that in for a little while. It’s the first time the Phils are above water this season, and it took five straight wins to get there. It feels good. A win streak like this is exactly what this teams needs, and they continued to roll tonight...
