ATLANTA -- John Mayberry, Jr.'s three-run home run into the left field seats in the 10th inning sent the Phillies to an 8-5 win over the Braves in the first game of a three-game series.

Charlie Manuel shook a bottle of aspirin after the game, laughing, "I've got a headache! It was a mentally tough game."

Craig Kimbrel gave up a home run to Erik Kratz to lead off the ninth inning, tying the game at 5-5. It was his first blown save since July 20 and only his second blown save of the season.

"I was trying to elevate on him and it didn't go high enough," Kimbrel said.

"We give the ball to Craig and we've gotten spoiled over the last couple of years," manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

"I'm not even quite sure what the pitch was, to tell you the truth," Mayberry, Jr. said. "I was just looking for something up in the zone out over the plate. I wasn't sure if it was going to hook foul. Luckily, it stayed true."

Martin Prado and Freddie Freeman each hit two-run home runs in the fifth inning and Dan Uggla led off the sixth with a home run of his own and the Braves led the Phillies 5-4 going into the ninth.

Ryan Howard drove in three of the Phillies runs, one on a home run to lead off the second inning and two with a bases-loaded single in the sixth, the last of four consecutive singles by the top of the order, Jimmy Rollins, Kevin Frandsen, Chase Utley and Howard.

Roy Halladay lasted only 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing since going only two innings on May 27 at St. Louis. He was sick Thursday night, although no one knew that until the third inning.

"I was just zapped once I got out there," he said.

Mike Minor's five innings were his shortest outing since a rain delay cut his August 2 start versus the Marlins to only 3 2/3 innings.

The bullpens got the decisions: Josh Lindblom (3-4, 1-1 with the Phillies) the win, Cristhian Martinez (5-4) the loss. Jonathan Papelbon earned his 31st save.
