Sons of Steve Garvey:
"Hell Yeah, I Like Hubris."
From "Inside the collapse" by Bob Hohler at the Boston Globe:
As Hurricane Irene barreled toward Boston in late August, management proposed moving up the Sunday finale of a weekend series against Oakland so the teams could play a day-night doubleheader either Friday, Aug. 26, or Saturday, Aug. 27. The reasoning seemed sound: the teams would avoid a Sunday rainout and the dilemma of finding a mutual makeup date for teams separated by 2,700 miles.
But numerous Sox players angrily protested. They returned early that Friday from Texas after a demanding stretch in which they had played 14 of 17 games on the road, with additional stops in Minneapolis, Seattle, and Kansas City. The players accused management of caring more about making money than winning, which marked the first time the team’s top executives sensed serious trouble brewing in the clubhouse. [...]
Sox owners soon suspected the team's poor play was related to lingering r...

Red Sox DH Ortiz: 'Too much drama' in Boston
With manager Terry Francona and general manager Theo Epstein out the door, could slugger David Ortiz be next?
Ortiz told ESPN that he's unsure if he wants to be back in Boston next season because "There's too much drama."
Ortiz remarks came on the same day that Epstein had reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs and hours after a Boston Globe...
Lackey, Beckett, & Lester Outed as Booze Brothers
The Boston press continues it's long reputation of dishing dirt with a another hit piece in today's Boston Globe. It's a very lengthy artlicle, but here are some of the highlights lowlights:Boston’s three elite starters went soft, their pitching as anemic as their work ethic. The indifference of Beckett, Lester, and Lackey in a time of crisis can be seen in what team...
David Ortiz Says Some Red Sox Players Probably Didn’t Care
With the greatest collapse in franchise history comes plenty of speculation about what went wrong. After the Red Sox lost a nine-game Wild Card lead in less than a month, people wanted answers. A team can’t just implode without providing a few reason as to what caused it — especially a team in Boston. Over [...]
Rozer Helpfully Maps Out Epstein’s First Few Days On The Job
While Nomar Garciaparra compares the treatment suddenly afforded to Tito Francona on his way out the door to the brickbats aimed at such all-time Boston greats as Carl Yazstremski, Ted Williams and…uh, Carl Everett Nomar Gariaparra, departing GM Theo Epstein receives a number of helpful suggestions from the Daily Herald’s Barry Rozner on how to best assume the same position...
Theo Epstein reported to be on his way to the Cubs
According to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald, Theo Epstein is on his way to Chicago and will leave his GM job with the Red Sox soon.
Buckley is one of the most connected guys in the Red Sox organization so I’ll take his word for it:
Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox to accept a position...
The High Road
Reading the Boston Globe’s take down of Theo Epstein and Terry Francona this morning gave me a horrible sense of deja vu. The name on the article may have been Bob Hohler, but he only wrote that article in the sense that he literally typed the text up on his computer. The words and the substance of the piece was clearly the work of some fairly significant players in the Red...

Breaking News: Epstein Named Cubs GM
The Chicago Cubs and former Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein have agreed to terms that will pay the two-time World Champion General Manager upwards of $20 million over 5-years. The specifics of the terms have not been agreed upon. This exclusive news was broke by Boston’s Dennis and Callahan Show just moments ago.
The Boston Globe reported today of how dysfunctional the...
Dueling News Outlets
The Boston Globe reports that Theo Epstein leaving for the Cubs is not quite as far along as the Boston Herald reports. Stay tuned.
Adrian!
Gaslamp Ball is not surprised to find out that Adrian Gonzalez lacks leadership skills.
In general, I don’t care. If someone hits .338/.410/.548 for the season, he did his job. If he wants to kick some other players into action, fine, but they are all grown men earning lots of money. They shouldn’t need motivation to perform at their best.
