Houston Hotbed:
The last Houston Astros embarassing 9th-inning lead spoiled by Brandon Lyon, all too reminiscient of Wednesday’s 3-2 collapse in Cincinnati, came on Opening Day in Philadelphia. Following that devastating loss, the ‘Stros regressed and went on to lose the following 4 games before finally picking up the pieces and earning a victory.
Sure, losing in such a fashion takes an emotional toll on any player, but they can not afford to let themselves fall backwards into another funk. The guys must simply clear their minds and remember that it was ‘just another day’ in a lengthy 162-game schedule.
That being said, Lyon’s not off the hook here. Let’s be blunt: he was pathetic. He allowed the Reds to climb back from a 2-0 hole and win the game (on Jay Bruce’s walk-off RBI double) without managing to even record a single out. And to think, he had been pitching so well…
