NEW YORK -- With just enough runs to support him, Johan Santana finally got his first win of 2012 as the New York Mets held off the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 Saturday before 30,253 at Citi Field. The two-time Cy Young winner, for whom the Mets had been shut out in four of his first five starts, took advantage of a four-run Mets outburst in the fourth inning as he improved to 1-2 on the season. Santana didn’t have his best stuff, but managed to work his way through seven innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and a walk, with five strikeouts. Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless eighth and Frank Francisco closed out the ninth for his sixth save. Santana bested 22-year-old Patrick Corbin (1-1), who was looking for his second consecutive winning start since being called up by Arizona from Double-A Mobile on April 30. Daniel Murphy tied his career high with four hits, while light-hitting backup catcher Mike Nickeas had a two-run single to pace the Mets. New York broke a season-...

Santana Earns First Win Of The Season As Mets Top D-Backs 4-3

Santana (1-2) allowed nine hits but gave up only three runs, striking out five and walking one. He threw a season high 108 pitches and did a fantastic job of gutting out a win on a day where he didn’t have his best stuff. He never hit more than...

The Bonus

It used to be that we paid Johan Santana to do what he did on Saturday: be the stopper. Make sure four game losing streaks don't become five, or nine, or 28 game losing streaks. Now, the Mets are just paying him to go out there every five days and not get hurt. Anything else is a bonus. A win? Those have been so rare for Santana, that's like a Christmas bonus. Even when he...

D-backs 5, Mets 4: Another Loss

The Arizona Diamondbacks (14-13) defeated the Mets (13-13) by the score of 5-4. The Mets have now lost 4 in a row. Not much to say, but that we look bad. The Mets couldn’t cash in on opportunities tonight, nor did they hold the Diamondbacks when they needed to. The Mets just looked straight up awful, and did have all week. Even in Colorado the Mets were playing very sloppy, and...

New York Mets: Season Update and Weekly Preview

The New York Mets have been a minor pleasant surprise so far this baseball season. They jumped out of the gate and have managed to stay at or above .500 ever since. But with an anemic offense that shows few signs of improving and injuries beginning to take a toll we begin to wonder how much longer they can keep their heads above water. Let’s see how SBRForum.com is handling the...

Bounce

The bounce can be defined in one of two ways. First, there's the bounce back that the Mets are experiencing after losing three straight to the Astros and four overall by beating the Diamondbacks twice in two weekend games. The top guns in the rotation got it done with Johan Santana on Saturday, and R.A. Dickey on Sunday with eight innings of shutout baseball. He wanted nine,...
