2000 IONIX AWESOME POWERS MIKE PIAZZA Continuing on with our brief series of goofily named insert cards, this week we present for your consideration a 2000 Upper Deck Ionix Mike Piazza Awesome Powers. Yeah baby! Ionix was a one-and-done offering from Upper Deck, and it is as much a product of the year 2000 as Y2K hangovers and Subway Series remorse. It contains a swath of tech-happy insert sets with names like Atomic, Pyrotechnics, BIOrhythm, and Shockwave. And then there’s this hot mess. These Awesome Powers cards are printed on a gold holofoil stock, with the player image and groovy background lettering slightly embossed. The card backs repeat the basic design motif, but unfortunately the text is far from shagadelic. For example, this card tells us the following about Piazza, in perfect performance-reviewese: “His run production and team leadership make him an indispensable asset for any team.” The good news is that according to the latest price guides, this particular card is...

Mets Would Be Foolish To Deal Jeremy Hefner

Matt Harvey isn’t the only New York Mets pitcher not receiving any support from his hitters. The true measure of how well Jeremy Hefner has pitched this year isn’t found in his 2-6 record, but 3.72 ERA. Hefner has arguably been the Mets’ second most effective starter behind Harvey, which should mute any trade discussions. HEFNER: Having understated season. (AP) Hefner, tonight’s...

Josh Satin’s value to the Mets

It’s no surprise that as the Mets sit here in July, many new faces have come up and seen time in the big leagues. One of those new faces has come up and taken over at first base. That is none other than Josh Satin.  With Ike Davis finding himself in the minors and Lucas Duda hurt, the Mets turned to a prospect that they liked, but just couldn’t find room for at the big league...

Matt Harvey naked in a white bath robe launches dirty memes

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was photographed for ESPN the Magazine’s Body Issue, which is due out next week. The second-year pitcher has dominated this season, going 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA in 123 innings. His hot start was enough to make him a person of interest for ESPN’s shoot, and the magazine sent [...]

John Franco reportedly threw a baseball to intimidate woman after estate sale

Former New York Mets pitcher John Franco may be 52 years old and retired from baseball, but that doesn’t mean he can no longer throw. According to court papers that were recently filed by a woman who was in charge of Franco’s and his wife’s estate sale last year, he can still bring plenty of [...]

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Our 100 Loss Season

Newman and Redford??? In 1969, veteran Hollywood actor Paul Newman and relative newcomer Robert Redford teamed up to star in one of the greatest and most fun westerns of...

Despite 13th inning home run, D-Backs fall

The streak continues, as does the heartbreak. Wade Miley pitched well enough to earn a win, but the bullpen let him down before Cody Ross hit a late game home run in the 13th. But the Mets had the last laugh, walking off in the bottom half of the inning to win, 5-4.

D-backs outlast Mets in wild 15-inning finale

NEW YORK (AP) -- Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks, boosted early by Gerardo Parra's bunt double, finally outlasted the New York Mets 5-4 in a back-and-forth classic Thursday to split an exhausting series at Citi Field. Arizona scored in the final three innings but couldn't close out the feisty Mets until Brad...
