The Mets have officially parted ways with former first-round pick Mike Pelfrey. The team declined to offer him a contract before Friday night’s non-tender deadline making him a free agent.
The team also non-tendered outfielder Andres Torres and reliever Manny Acosta. The team tendered contracts to first baseman Ike Davis, second baseman Daniel Murphy, reliever Bobby Parnell and catcher Josh Thole.
The decision to non-tender Pelfrey comes as no surprise considering he earned $5.7 million in 2012 and could not be offered anything less than $4.9 million.
Manager Terry Collins has expressed interest in bringing back Pelfrey as a reliever and to give the team added depth in the rotation, but Pelfrey made clear today his intention is to sign with a team who will give him a starting role. Pelfrey told ESPN New York:
