Updated On Jan. 17 by Joe D. From Marc Carig of Newsday, the latest on The Beard: Source: Mets still haven’t closed the door on a major league deal for former Giants closer Brian Wilson. Fear the Beard Rumors! Updated On Jan. 16 by Joe D. This from Mike Puma of the NY Post: Brian Wilson probably shouldn’t change his ring tone to “Meet the Mets” anytime soon. According to a baseball source, the veteran closer didn’t impress the Mets during his workout at UCLA on Saturday and wasn’t deemed worthy of a major league contract at this point in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Wilson, the source said, wasn’t interested in a minor league deal. “Physically, he’s not ready,” the source said. “He’s got a ways to go.” We haven’t heard the last of this yet. There’s only a few household names left on the market, and the Mets will keep up the pretense that they are engaging these players as long as they can. Updated On Jan. 14 by Joe D. Mets Card of the Week: 2012 Lucas Duda

2012 TOPPS CHROME CYAN PRINTING PLATE LUCAS DUDA The concept of serial numbering cards gained mainstream hobby acceptance in the early ’90s, thanks in large part to the Donruss Elite inserts discussed here. As the decade progressed in a haze of flannel and Seinfeld, the legion of extant card companies kept lowering the limbo stick. 5,000. 3,000. 2,500. 1,000. How low can you...

Juan Centeno is among nine NRIs for the Mets

Every spring, players across all of Major League Baseball fight for a spot on a big league squad.  Some of these players have a high salary; others are top prospects and than there are the guys who just need a job. The latter usually come in the form of non-roster invites that have a higher chance of spending the 2013 season in the minors for clubs such as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre...

SF Giants Rumors: Giants, World Baseball Classic

Today the World Baseball Classic rosters were announced, and there’s a few San Francisco Giants players sprinkled around the WBC tournament.   Team USA announced that they will have two Giants pitchers, and that’s Ryan Vogelsong and reliever Jeremy Affeldt. Team Venezuela will have position players Pablo Sandoval, Marco Scutaro and reliever Jose Mijares from the Giants. Team...

How Sandy Alderson has leveraged the offseason for the Mets

While the Wipons are leveraged to the hilt, this offseason has been a textbook case about how a team and a general manager use leverage (or have it used against them.) While TNT canceled the TV show “Leverage,” that word is still being used more today than I’m guessing any of us would have imagined just five years ago. So, what is leverage? The dictionary definition is as...

Cubs Make Late Pitch For Hairston, Mets Balked At $8 Million, Two Years

Updated on Jan. 15 by Joe D. Some interesting tidbits from Jon Heyman tonight regarding our boy Scott Hairston… Heyman tweeted that the Mets balked when Hairston asked them for $8 million over two years. That must have turned Sandy ten different shades of purple. It’s a significant raise for Hairston who has never made more than $2.45 million in his career, but not totally unreasonable eithe...

Giants 3B Sandoval in hospital

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval is in a Venezuelan hospital with abdominal pain. CSN Bay Area reported Thursday that Sandoval has been hospitalized since Wednesday with colitis but is expected back on the field soon with his Winter League team in Magallanes. Sandoval's brother, Michael, initially tweeted that Pablo was hospitalized with an unspecified abdominal pain.

Mets have Dice K and Brandon Webb on their radar

The New York Mets continue to scour the free agent market for veteran pitchers who will accept minor league contracts while looking to rebuild their value.  A Chris Young reunion is always an option and guys like Shaun Marcum and Joe Saunders also remain on the teams radar. #bbpBox_291922452517376002 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_291922452517376002 a:hover {...

MMO Top 25 Prospects: #10 Luis Mateo, RHP

MMO Top Prospect – #10 Luis Mateo, RHP Luis Mateo is a name that most Mets fan know by now and that is definitely with good reason. Mateo was an international prospect who was not under the radar by any means, as he already had a history with the Giants and Padres before he ever came the Mets way. His deal with the Giants fell apart after bone chips were discovered in his elbow...

Daisuke Matsuzaka Talking With Mets

MetsBlog passes along that former Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka told Hochi Shimbun that he is now talking with the Mets, Indians and Marlins, though other teams have expressed interest in signing him this winter. Dice-K prefers to sign a big-league contract with incentives. However, it is also likely he ends up signing a minor-league deal or could return to pitch in Japan...

Ryan Theriot Rumors: Phillies, Giants Interested in Infielder

The Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants are among the teams interested in free agent middle infielder Ryan Theriot, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman notes that if the Giants were to acquire Theriot, he would likely compete with Brandon Crawford for playing time at shortstop. Theriot would be middle-infield insurance for the Phillies, who have...

Update: The New York Mets Love Creampies

New rule: when somebody asks you a question on Twitter, run every word of it through the Urban Dictionary. Otherwise, you’re like the New York Mets, stuck talking about how awesome it is when people creampie you. Quick, somebody try to convince them that “cuckold” is an old-timey term for being “scrappy.” (h/t to Media Rantz)- Follow us on Twitter @withleather - Follow...

Japanese Invasion, Sort Of

I admit it: I’ve been one of those guys hoping for the Giants to dive into the Japanese market for players for a while. It’s a big risk: for the best players, there’s a big ‘Posting fee’ that the team would have to pay before even being able to negotiate a salary, but it’s an enticing one.  It’s not just because that Japanese players are an untapped market (it’s...

Outfield? What Outfield?

I find it difficult to take everything Sandy Alderson says at face value. That’s just a nice way of saying I can’t believe anything he says. I’m now referring to him as “Hans Christian Alderson” for his ability to weave the most amazing yarns and whimsical tales. The observant ones among you all realize that it’s all just smoke and mirrors designed to silence the naysayers...
